The Lean concepts and principles described in this book have revolutionized manufacturing practice and business conduct in a manner similar to what Henry Ford’s system did for mass manufacturing. Lean production however, involves much more than the adoption of methods and procedures, it requires a change in management philosophy that emphasizes relationship building, trust, and responsibility being conferred to frontline workers and suppliers.
Based on three decades of teaching experience, Lean Production for a Competitive Advantage: A Comprehensive Guide to Lean Methodologies and Management Practices introduces the Lean philosophy and illustrates the effective application of Lean tools with real-world case studies. From fundamental concepts to integrated planning and control in pull production and the supply chain, the text provides a complete introduction to Lean production. Coverage includes small batch production, setup reduction, pull production, preventive maintenance, standard operations, as well as synchronizing and scheduling lean operations. Detailing the key principles and practices of Lean production, the text also:
- Illustrates effective implementation techniques with case studies from a range of industries
- Includes questions and completed problems in each chapter
- Explains how to effectively partner with suppliers and employees to accomplish productivity goals
Designed for studentswho havea basic foundation in production and operations management, the text provides a thorough understanding of the fundamental principles of Lean. It also offers practical know-how for implementing a culture of continuous improvement on the shop floor or in the office, creating a heightened sense of responsibility and pride in all stakeholders involved, and enhancing productivity and efficiency to improve the bottom line.

For the classroom or the factory, here's the single most comprehensive lean book
By RJS
Lean manufacturing has emerged as a centerpiece of curricula in operations and production management. Finally, there is a subject-matter textbook worthy of building courses around: John Nicholas’s Lean Production for Competitive Advantage. The bulk of the book, in Section II (seven chapters, 339 pp.), is a comprehensive and adroit discussion of lean fundamentals: Small-lot production; Setup-time reduction; Maintaining and improving equipment; Pull production systems; Focused factories and group technology; Work cells and cellular manufacturing; Standard operations; and Quality and the Source and Mistake-Proofing. Setting the stage for those “lean core” topics are four chapters. The first, Race without a Finish Line, reviews the competitive purposes of lean, its historical evolution, and how it has become “imperative” for manufacturers today. The three chapters of Section I continue with Fundamentals of Continuous Improvement; Value Added and Waste Elimination; and Customer-Focused Quality. The book winds up with Section III: chapters on Uniform Flow and Mixed-Model Scheduling; Synchronizing and Balancing the Process; and Lean Production in the Supply Chain.
Besides plentiful examples, end-of-chapter questions, and (where applicable) problems, what catches the eye are special insights. For example, under Setup times (Ch. 6), a section called, Abolish the Setup, states that instead of a single, expensive machine for producing many kinds of parts, lean advises several less-expensive machines, each dedicated to a single part. With machines devoted to one part, or similar kinds of parts, “changeover between parts is eliminated or is reduced to trivial steps.” That discussion includes reference to multiple simple machines that can simultaneously produce many products—a concept that has become a contemporary lean topic generally referred to as concurrent production.
The book does not neglect the human factor, blending, for example, labor flexibility into various chapters: The cellular manufacturing chapter refers to a record of employee skills “ …maintained for work-cell staffing assignments and pay-for-skill incentives.” With multiple skills, workers “…should be rotated daily or weekly among the stations within a cell, or in different cells in a focused factory ….” The chapter on focused factories adds that “ …each worker might also be responsible for machine setups, routine machine maintenance, quality control, and job scheduling,” which requires considerable training, but resulting in “…less boredom and, possibly, greater satisfaction.”
Although this book serves particularly well as a college textbook, it also can fill a need for lean training of practitioners. Many of the books used in industry devote inordinate attention to studying, organization, and preparing for lean; and give scant attention to the core elements of lean (cells, quick setup, kanban, multi-skilling, etc.) that actually change processes to improve competitive response. In short, this book by Dr. Nicholas deserves a prominent place among educators, and students; trainers and practitioners of lean manufacturing.

finally an production operations management textbook centered on Lean
By Luc
Been looking for it for ages, but never found a good enough operations management textbook that finally takes Lean as an all-encompassing operations theme. But that is exactly what businesses of today need and do. Granted, I take 'Lean' as defined in it's most enlarged form (including total quality, TOC, agility for example). This book is a mile higher compared to the so many expensive, poorly structured operations/production management textbooks that are in their n-th edition (cash cows for authors and publishers) but structurally based on older views (of the 80s or even before) on the subject field. Operations management is a fantastic management field and more than ever a basis for competitive edge!
Not that it's all perfect though - it's a bit too focused on 'production' and less on 'operations' in non-production environments (hospitals, offices) and I'm missing a few Lean topics that should have been included (waiting lines, failure demand, TWI, hoshin kanri, suma's, mizusumashi), but it's the best around so-far, by far! And it comes with ppt slides, and exercises and an instructor's manual. Great book!

Not Keeping for Reference
By Travis R.
I had to buy this as a textbook for a class, but I will not be keeping it. I found it to be very poorly written and was vague about most of the subjects covered. Most of the homework questions were missing information to complete and/or required way too many assumptions to be a useful method of practicing concepts. Furthermore, a lot of the homework questions were subjective. I think you can gain a better understanding of Lean Principles by googling it. I was not a fan of this book and I do not recommend it.
