The Killer Angels: The Classic Novel of the Civil War (Civil War Trilogy), by Michael Shaara

“My favorite historical novel . . . a superb re-creation of the Battle of Gettysburg, but its real importance is its insight into what the war was about, and what it meant.”—James M. McPherson

In the four most bloody and courageous days of our nation’s history, two armies fought for two conflicting dreams. One dreamed of freedom, the other of a way of life. Far more than rifles and bullets were carried into battle. There were memories. There were promises. There was love. And far more than men fell on those Pennsylvania fields. Bright futures, untested innocence, and pristine beauty were also the casualties of war. Michael Shaara’s Pulitzer Prize–winning masterpiece is unique, sweeping, unforgettable—the dramatic story of the battleground for America’s destiny.

Amazon.com Review
This novel reveals more about the Battle of Gettysburg than any piece of learned nonfiction on the same subject. Michael Shaara's account of the three most important days of the Civil War features deft characterizations of all of the main actors, including Lee, Longstreet, Pickett, Buford, and Hancock. The most inspiring figure in the book, however, is Col. Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, whose 20th Maine regiment of volunteers held the Union's left flank on the second day of the battle. This unit's bravery at Little Round Top helped turned the tide of the war against the rebels. There are also plenty of maps, which convey a complete sense of what happened July 1-3, 1863. Reading about the past is rarely so much fun as on these pages.

From Library Journal
The late Shaara's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel (1974) concerns the battle of Gettysburg and was the basis for the 1993 film Gettysburg. The events immediately before and during the battle are seen through the eyes of Confederate Generals Lee, Longstreet, and Armistead and Federal General Buford, Colonel Joshua L. Chamberlain, and a host of others. The author's ability to convey the thoughts of men in war as well as their confusion-the so-called "fog of battle"-is outstanding. This unabridged version is read clearly by award-winning actor George Hearn, who gives each character a different voice and effectively conveys their personalities; chapters and beginnings and ends of sides are announced. Music from the movie version adds to the drama. All this comes in a beautiful package with a battle map. Recommended for public libraries not owning previous editions from Recorded Books and Blackstone Audio (Audio Reviews, LJ 2/1/92 and LJ 2/1/93, respectively).

“Remarkable . . . a book that changed my life . . . I had never visited Gettysburg, knew almost nothing about that battle before I read the book, but here it all came alive.”—Ken Burns

“Utterly absorbing . . . Shaara fabulously, convincingly brings characters such as Robert E. Lee to life and makes the conflict all too real.”—Forbes

“Shaara carries [the reader] swiftly and dramatically to a climax as exciting as if it were being heard for the first time.”—The Seattle Times

let's us feel what it may be like to be marched to death
By Modern Fossil
Killer Angels is the second of three historical novels in Michael Shaara's epic telling of the story of the American Civil War. They books are described by the author as "historical fictions", which means he tells his well-studied version of what happened as truthfully as possible in the form of a novel where we look into the interactions and events of notable people involved in the war, particularly the Generals. The format is highly effective and it really lets Shaara put us in the middle of the battles, the middle of the planning sessions, let's us feel what it may be like to be marched to death, to see your blood brother's leg amputated, to see truces called to clear the dead and injured off the battle field when farm animals come to feast upon them, let's us feel like we may be experiencing just a modicum of the horror that the men and women of the civil war experienced. Shaara's prose draws you right in and leaves you there to where you feel like you are watching more than reading, and every once while he reminds you, it's only a novel. Then you take pause, and you realize that for millions of people, it was nothing less than real.

Fantastic Read

For such a remarkable book I am not surprised it won the Pulitzer Prize. Each side in this famous battle is fairly presented. As a young boy I visited the site of this great battle and my take, until I read Angels of Death, was that Pickett made a reckless charge (much like The Charge of The Light Brigade) which was doomed from the start. But Pickett was not alone and it was all Robert E Lee's idea. But this fact is really a small part of this book. A more important fact is to discover that Chamberlain is really the hero of this battle and in many ways the best General in the field on both sides. I have never read a book that describes the horrors of war with such poetic honesty.

A Gorgeous Freak
By Sylvia Weiser Wendel
For over a year now (or is it two years?) I've been slowly wading through Shelby Foote's 3-volume Civil War history. After reading the Gettysburg section, I thought a fictional portrayal of that battle might be helpful, and perhaps even enjoyable. I didn't have high hopes for Shaara's book; I enjoy popular history, but popular, mass-selling novels (the kind with raised letters on the cover) generally don't work for me.
Pleasant surprise! Shaara has his own voice and is skilled at drawing characters. He'll find some kind of tic, some gesture, some expression, that will successfully differentiate each individual in his (extremely) large cast. The large, stoic, mostly silent, heartbroken Longstreet and the restless intellectual Chamberlain become completely three-dimensional. Robert E. Lee, so noble, so deluded, is another excellent portrait.
Why four stars, not five? A few annoying aspects: the disjointed, run-on sentences ("He had to know where they were, had to see over the next rise, no time to think about poor Mary, would it rain again tonight? ", etc.). The weight of a serious subject, and the author's overweening concern that he Get It Right, drags down the shoulders of this book, making it slump when it should strut. Shaara has his lyrical moments, but they don't quite rise to the level of art. On the other hand, for many readers these concerns will be irrelevant.
The book is all in all a gorgeous freak. It's a one-off, a singular triumph of research (published in 1975, before the internet made everything easy) and imagination, written by an obvious obsessive and polished to an almost dizzying glint. I'm now reading "Gods and Generals," by the author's son Jeff, and believe me, the sparkle is missing. That one is a plodder, to be covered in another review.
