Second edition only?

I ordered a copy of this book because I needed a judge's copy for a competition. I was surprised and disappointed find the 2nd edition of this book doesn't have either of the two pieces I needed! I wish they would stop "updating" these books. I actually liked the music in the first editions better. In this case they could have marketed it as "More performance pieces" or some other title that would indicate that most of the music would be different. Now I am really stuck because I can't find the first edition of this book anywhere.

Good book for an adult piano student

I am an adult learning piano from a Simply Music teacher, a method that has students playing songs from the first day, whether they read music or not. I like to supplement the program's books with outside books like this one, because I really want to play classical music. It's my whole motivation behind taking piano.

This book has several classical selections, melodies that you might be familiar with -- minuets, marches and concertos -- but also familiar old songs like "All Through the Night" or "Fascination." It has a few modern pieces, too, which helps me stretch myself with music I would never have attempted otherwise. The pieces are fairly simple, but the Faber Level 3B isn't a true beginning book. In the Faber method, I would be considered an early intermediate player. (I also bought their Piano Literature - Book 2: Developing Artist Original Keyboard Classics.) I've been taking Simply Music lessons for 10 months, was a flute player, and tried piano once before.

The combination of the Simply Music method along with books like this one and sheet music from the Internet feed my longing for classical music. I must say, too, that I have a GREAT teacher, who encourages and motivates me. I'm having fun learning a new instrument in an environment that encourages experimentation and enables enjoyment.

Buyer Beware!

This is an updated edition! Several of the songs my son thought sounded great when his piano teacher played them at his lesson are NOT included in this edition!! This is the Second Edition, copyrights 1998 AND 2015. I'm sure the songs in this edition are great but they were NOT what I was looking for. The Legend of Madrid, The Funeral of a Marionette, Glad Cat Rag, Guitars of Seville, The Return and The Piano Playin' Chocolate Eater's Blues are NOT included!

Don't have the time I used for writing reviews... However, I had to write one real quick for this great book on PDEs (since no one else has.) I originally purchased this book to supplement another that was terrible. I have since used it repeatedly as a reference/refresher. This is how all text book should be.

Useful, but...

This book contains a great deal of useful information gleaned from unimpeachable public records, but I was disappointed to see that the author considered "The Horn Papers" to be a valid source. They were proven to be a hoax in the 1940's; see the "The Mystery of the Horn Papers," William & Mary Quarterly, 3d ser., vol.4 (Oct. 1947), pp. 409-443.

Another issue I have with the book is the matter of conflating the identities of same-named persons. For example, there were two men in Greene/Dunkard Townships named Leonard Garrison; one was the son of Frederick Garrison, while the other was Frederick Garrison's brother. The author states that Leonard Garrison married his first wife in 1785, yet three of their children were born by 1775. Leonard Garrison's will is transcribed, and it is stated that the will was probated in 1819. In the following paragraph, the author states that Leonard Garrison appeared in open court in 1833 to apply for a Revolutionary War pension. Did it ever occur to the author that a person can't appear in court 14 years after his own death? Simple proofreading could have caught these mistakes.

Finally, there is the issue of footnotes. Simply listing an URL without accompanying information is not an acceptable format. Elizabeth Shown Mills' book "Evidence Explained:Citing History Sources from Artifacts to Cyberspace" would be a good start for bringing the footnote formats up to par.

This book would be very good if other similar books were unavailable. Since I have other books about this area of SW PA, it did not add much new information for me. However, if you have an interest and no other books, this would be helpful.

Absolutely beautiful book.

My property professor covered about 1,100 pages of Dukeminier's textbook this semester, and she kept raving about how well the textbook was written and how she loved it.

Now, studying for the final, I cannot imagine a better book to review/re-learn some of this stuff.

Even if you didn't read his textbook, he covers literally EVERYTHING of importance. And, he has a handy section in the front that tells you what pages to focus on, depending on what textbook you read.

I love you Mr. Dukeminier, keep up the good work.

One of the Better Gilbert's

Gilbert Law Summaries: Property is one of the better Gilbert commercial outlines.

My property professor did not use Dukeminier's textbook, yet, this outline still seemed to flow pretty well chronologically with what we were studying. This was really helpful. I imagine that if your professor uses Dukeminier's textbook this resource would be even more invaluable.

Like any other Gilbert's this outline has a TON of information. Much much more information than you will likely cover in your class. And, as always, the outline is fairly specific in its coverage. It lists all of the exceptions to the exceptions which will likely bog you down if you do not have a good understanding of the general framework of the property law you are studying. And which will likely not be tested on your exams...but they are always good to know.

All-in-all I used this book to supplement my studies and found that it covered everything I needed and more. I didn't find any inconsistencies or conflicts with anything my professor said. Too bad property law in itself is killer.

he may be the Duke, but...

As other reviewers have mentioned, Dukeminier's textbook is the most common book for property, leading one to believe that his outline should be a natural choice.

In light of how much I pay for law school tuition, I decided to get some insurance by purchasing Gilbert's and Emanuel's outlines for most classes, and use the best of each for my course work.

As a side effect of that, I was able to do a comparison between the two and I was surprised that Emanuel's consistently gave deeper and broader treatment of subjects, especially in Property and Contracts.

Although Duke's outline is certainly useful, I strongly believe that you can do better with Emanuel's, which is also keyed to Duke's textbook.
