A Poor Gentleman (1840s) was a two-act play whose themes were compared to the works of Nikolai Gogol, a writer that Turgenev greatly admired and was influenced by. It was for writing an obituary for Gogol that Turgenev found himself arrested and imprisoned for a month, having managed to publish the obituary despite its being banned by the censor.

About the Author
Born in Orel in central Russia in 1818 Ivan Turgenev studied at the universities in Moscow, St. Petersburg and Berlin and worked briefly for the civil service before turning to writing. He wrote several novels that examined the social, political and philosophical issues of the time as well as many plays and short stories. Living mainly in Baden-Baden and Paris Turgenev was acquainted with a variety of influential writers and met Dickens and Trollope among others on his travels to England. He was widely perceived to be the first major Russian writer to achieve great success in Europe. Turgenev died in Paris in 1883. The subtitle of Richard Garnett's biography (reissued in Faber Finds) of his grandmother, Constance Garnett (1861-1946) is A Heroic Life. It couldn't be more apt. She remains the most prolific English translator of Russian literature: twelve volumes of Dostoevsky, five of Gogol, six of Herzen (his complete My Past and Thoughts), seventeen of Tchehov (her spelling), five of Tolstoy, eleven of Turgenev and so on. Many of these will be appearing in Faber Finds. In all she translated over sixty works. It is not, however, the sheer quantity that is to be celebrated, though that in itself is remarkable, it is more the enduring quality of her work. Of course there have been critics - translation is a peculiarly controversial subject, but there have been many more admirers. Tolstoy himself praised her. Of her Turgenev translations, Joseph Conrad said 'Turgeniev (sic) for me is Constance Garnett and Constance Garnett is Turgeniev'. Katherine Mansfield declared the lives of her generation of writers were transformed by Constance Garnett's translations, and H. E. Bates went so far as to say that modern English Literature itself could not have been what it is without her translations. This extraordinary achievement was accomplished despite poor health and poor eyesight, the latter being ruined by her labours on War and Peace ,a tragic if fitting sacrifice; hers indeed was A Heroic Life.

Refreshing, engaging, useable

This review was written by my son, Brian Jennings, a 33-year-old minister in Tulsa, OK. and posted on his VIRB (blog) site.

The book is mostly a narrative. Vines was at a hotel when the hotel manager found out that he was a Christian speaker. She invited him to dinner with her staff and he accepted. What he didn't know was that the whole thing was a set-up. Within the first few moments of dinner it became apparent that the staff's plan was to ridicule him for believing in God. But Vines did not flinch and did not become defensive. He simply asked if they could engage in an intellectual conversation. What followed was a conversation that went way past midnight. The conversation included anger, humor, mocking and tears. But in the end... well, I won't tell you. But you should read it.

I've read lots of "apologetic" books (books that defend the Bible, God or Christianity), but typically their approach is to offer logic and proof in the form of "Here's why you should believe." Dinner with Skeptics was refreshing because it actually lets us read how the conversation played out. It made the book very engaging (I typically don't read books like this in 2 days).

There are "asides" in the book where Vines takes a time-out from the story to explain why he chose to say what he did, or to expound on the topic. These were helpful breaks from the story.

I would suggest this book for anyone who is struggling with understanding why there is pain, evil and suffering in this world. Vines' insights were helpful to me personally and I have already had opportunity to use some of what I've learned when talking with others.

Good Answers To Tough Questions

Christian Apologetics covers a wide variety of subjects and depending upon the audience can range from simple treatments of common questions to very detailed erudite examinations of specific points of an argument. This book is clearly aimed at the general public and offers easy to understand answers to the common objections raised by skeptics to a good and omnipotent God existing because of all the evil in the world. It deals with the various manifestations of these criticisms and provides reasonable answers to each objection.

My first encounter with the writing of Jeff Vines came via an abbreviated version of this same story published in The Christian Standard as a 3 part series on August 13th, 20th & 27th of 2006. The story was compelling then and is even more compelling in the fuller format of the book.

I'm not sure if the dinner and conversations recounted in this book are factual events or fictitious characters invented to allow Jeff to make his points. They are presented in a manner that makes me think they are real events but there are parts of this story that seem almost too incredible. One of the people at this dinner reportedly was in a distraught emotional state, even crying for the 6+ hours this dinner and conversation lasted yet not one person at the dinner raised a question about her emotional state before Jeff approached her almost 6 hours into the meal and discussion. Imagining a scenario where this could occur is difficult. A boss and her employees making a practice of regularly eating dinner together after work is also a management-employee relationship that is at minimum very unusual. The order in which the skeptic's questions come and their willingness to accept the answers given is tailor made for the Apologist to make his argument. This situation is almost too good to be true but life is often stranger than fiction.

As a Christian with a deep interest in Christian Apologetics I am personally very distressed by much of what passes as scholarship in apologetics circles. There are quality books and material, available but a significant amount of the material is Apologists quoting or misquoting each other and often taking quotes out of their original context. That is why I cringed when seeing in the introduction that Jeff had added a footnote to his comparison of a tornado passing through a junkyard and assembling a fully functioning 747 as describing how one of the dinner guests viewed God's likeliness of recovering from where she perceived God had gone. The footnote referenced the original source. The tornado example originated in astronomer Fred Hoyle's 1983 book *The Intelligent Universe*. Hoyle was a proponent of a theory that life was transmitted to the Earth via microbes traveling in comets. He was arguing against the impossibility of the abiogenesis required by other evolutionists that believe life auto-organized on this planet. Hoyle wrote the following passage:
"A junkyard contains all the bits and pieces of a Boeing 747, dismembered and in disarray. A whirlwind happens to blow through the yard. What is the chance that after its passage a fully assembled 747, ready to fly, will be found standing there? So small as to be negligible, even if a tornado were to blow through enough junkyards to fill the whole Universe." (p.19)
I have no objection to the paraphrase of this example but since the quote in its original context has no connection to the context Jeff is using it in, then the footnote is not applicable. The way some Apologists quote and misquote each other I almost expect a book by another author, quoting Vines, paraphrasing Hoyle and now claiming that Hoyle was making a theological claim.

With those few minor caveats I found the book to be engaging and helpful to those people either struggling with the questions surrounding the problem of evil themselves or for lay believers that are looking for simple and practical arguments to answer these questions. The book puts in the format of a dinner conversation the questions that most believers have heard from skeptics at one time or another concerning reconciling our belief in a good and omnipotent God and various aspects of the problem of evil.

In the interest of full disclosure I should note that Jeff Vines recently became the senior pastor of my church which might lead some people to believe that I would endorse anything he wrote. However, while I like, respect and on many occasions agree with Jeff Vines, I'm am not his sycophant. He and I have numerous areas of disagreement but I don't expect to agree with any man 100% of the time. However, tackling complex theological issues in ways that are easy to understand and practical in the lives of non-theologians is something that Jeff Vines does very well. For the reader who is looking for clear answers to some tough questions concerning God and evil this book is a good start.

Jeff Vines truly walks the walk!

I met Jeff Vines when my husband was stationed at Hunter Army Airfield, GA. We became members of Savannah Christian Church, where Jeff taught on Wednesday evenings, and preached quite often. This story is in fact true, and having experienced the authenticity of Jeff's faith and character firsthand, I can say that he truly walks the walk!

When we first came to Savannah, we visited Savannah Christian Church. I began having a conversation with Jeff's wife, Robin, not knowing who she was. Robin sort of took me under her wing, per say. She invited me to her home, where she and I shared stories from our lives. Any christian who has been obedient enough to walk out on faith has at least one big, unbelievable "God" story. This is the proof that God gives us, as encouragement. It is difficult often times to share these things with the world, because they are so miraculous that it leaves much room for doubt by those who have never experienced the like.

I began attending the same Sunday School class with Robin every week. It was really amazing that she was in class the day that I had MY incredible, unbelievable "God" moment take place regarding a mission trip to Poland.

When my husband came home from Iraq, he came up after service one week to shake Jeff's hand. Seeing that my husband was in the Army, Jeff invited him out to lunch later that week. When my husband called to schedule the lunch, Jeff's secretary laughed saying "That man takes everyone to lunch!" This is true! Jeff Vines not only invites strangers to lunch, but asks them for lists of ways that He can pray for them, and needs that the church can help meet. The brilliant theologian that he is, it is no wonder that God would allow him to participate in such an amazing exchange. "The Shack" is fiction. Jeff Vines is just an honest, true blue, disciplined, educated follower of Jesus Christ.

I have never heard this man boast about himself, he is truly humble. He wrote this book to give glory to God, for the difinitive privilege given him to lead others to Christ.

Very enjoyable alternative translation of my favorite Hesse book

I have read most of the novels of Hesse, and Narcissis and Goldmund is my favorite, I had read the Molinaro translation 5-6 times and assumed it was an unquestionably good translation because of it's wide distribution and predominance in the English version. I have loved Narcissis and Goldmund, but have always noticed a certain tone in the dialogues that I considered somewhat condescending (though that may not quite be the right word.)

I read German, and recently began reading it in the native language (slowly, been a while since I used German) and found the tone of the writing was quite different than I experienced in the English reading.

I just found this translation by Geoffrey Dunlop (originally printed as Death and the Lover (transl. by Geoffrey Dunlop, 1932)). I am about half-way though the reading, and it has been a total joy, like reading it for the first time, and now the slightly annoying "tone" is not present it this translation. Curious, I went back and began a word-for-work comparison of the translations, and I find they are not even close enough to compare. The Molinaro actually follows the German text much more closely, Dunlop's approach is freer, he seems to read the passage (paragraphs) and then writes the equivalent in English as translations. It is much freer, he is not so constrainted to have a sentences match sentence per sentence, he even moves parts of a sentence to the next paragraph, but he organized the thought/descriptions in a much more convincing way.

It has been like hearing a famous symphony performed at a new tempo, or seeing art that has been restored.... I find it a much superior work when compared to the other translations... when it come to the impact and the self-consciousness of the writing style. I may read Molinaro's translation again, but this will be my favorite, and has deepened my love for this great masterpiece.

Why it has been so overlooked is a puzzlement to me. It at least equals Molinaro's and at least should be read as a complement.

Dunlopp or Vennewitz?

I have two translations of Narziss (Geoffrey Dunlopp, the first English translation; and Leila Vennewitz, much more current, there is a good review of her on ABC Bookworld). I have read the Dunlop translation twice. It would seem I should therefore give Vennewitz a go, but that's not the point. I read Hesse to read Hesse in the best way, whatever that may mean. I like immersing myself in his worlds, including Glass Bead Game, Steppenwolf and Siddhartha.

I am about to read Narziss again and am weighing up these two translations. I can’t say I remember it that well in order to compare how a new translation would favour. Part of me says Dunlopp is probably the best as he is of Hesse’s time, they would thus share a more common literary world. Some people state older translations can tend towards being stuffy, I don’t agree with this. Usually the great translations that have become classics in English stand the test of time, examples being the Maude translations of Tolstoy and Moncrieff’s and Kilmartin’s Proust. I recently read a ‘fresh, new’ (American) translation of Madame Bovary and I had to put it down, the style was off-putting and too overtly American for its content. There are some translations that are so poor they destroy any chance of the book being appreciated in other languages.

But the Leila Vennewitz translation of Narziss (or Narcissus!) is highly regarded. I have compared corresponding paragraphs, and was surprised at how much they differ. Taking the first paragraph, what Dunlopp treats as one sentence, Vennewitz divides into more sentences. The main words all seem to correspond, so the general meaning all seems to be retained. The flow and style are both good. How the two styles progress cumulatively I would have to read more to discover and if I have to do that it can’t differ that much.

Then I looked at the beginning of Chapter three, paragraph one, a sentence, Dunlopp translates: ‘To him all was thought, even love.’ Leila Vennewitz translates as ‘To him all was spirit, including love; . . .’ Well, here, I think there is quite a difference in meaning, this is exactly what I didn’t want to find and I would have to go to the original German to discover more.

I’m interested if anybody has a preference between these two translations?

Notes
With the Amazon reviews they often have reviews included for other editions translated by a separate translator. I noticed this because for one edition a reviewer described the cover and I thought well that corresponds to a separate edition with a different translator.
It’s worth googling (Owen Witesman + Narziss). He writes a good article on translation, On the Rocky Road to a Good Translation; there are some interesting responses, particularly one by David (though his name isn’t stated in the thread) who compares Dunlopp’s (superior) translation to Ursule Molinaro word for word.

This is an important book

Read this book when you're young and confronted with all the choices one has to make in order to complete a life. This might be a great translation...who knows? I don't speak German so I can't comment on the subtlety of word choice or the transfer of meaning from one language to another or the correct use of idiom. The major themes of Narcissus and Goldmund are put across in this work.

Read it when you're young. Once able to understand the broad concepts that Hesse describes, you can breeze through the difficult parts with know-it-all, youthful arrogance. Save the hard parts for later. In mid life, this book is a wonder of imagery and explanation for what happened during life's amazing journey. In later years, in this my last reading, I found that the book did not begin for me until I was well into the Plague years.

Do yourself a favor--because this is an important book, purchase a hard bound copy for your library.

The author is on point when he mentions being surprised that nobody has ever tried to write a book on this subject before. I would've never thought that the saga of "Engineering" could be so entertaining. The credit goes to the author who put in a great amount of research to collect facts, figures and interesting stories from all around the country. This book made me understand the real reason of why me and millions of others like me are engineers today. If you are an engineer, from India, this book is a MUST READ. It will leave a mark in your heart!

Good for confidence.

Sexy and Confident is a book that I will be keeping for a while. I discovered many important things in it that really opened my eyes, including why I choose the men I've been choosing. The author really does a good job explaining how to overcome issues and improve self esteem along the way and how to be become that dream girl men want. A definte must read.

Good book

This book is probably one of the most accessible books like this out there. It is too the point and it is very easy to read and understand. You can really tell the author knows her stuff too and speaks from personal experience. It tells you at the beginning that it will make you feel better and be more confident and it does. What I liked best about the book was that it really deals in confidence and tells you that is one of the most important things a woman can have at her disposal.

Another thing that that makes this book different from other dating books is that it deals with what's happened in the past that might be hindering someone from moving ahead in the future. It really helped me deal with some issues that I needed to deal with. For that, it was worth the read and I think a lot of other women would benefit, too.

I was surprised when I received the book, because it is so thin. However, the book is divided into many short chapters (I liked it, I could easily read while travelling) which I found very interesting. I also liked the style in which the author writes. She writes wisely and I had the impression, that she really has experience on the matter.

It's a pity not to know anything about her and her background. Throughout the book the message is: respect yourself and expect the others to treat you with respect. If you don't respect yourself, the others won't either. One of the mistakes we do is also, to chase men, to be desperate if they don't call us back, to behave like boys to be their friends instead of being just what we are etc.

I'm reading it again to write down some of the things I would like to remember in order to positively change my behaviour.
