Great even for a beginner exploring many of today's ethical issues

I used this textbook in an undergraduate Communication Ethics course last year. It very helpful in introducing me to the study of ethics and how it fits into today's issues.

The book is divided into two parts: Ethical Theory (chapters 1-7)and Ethical Issues (chapters 8-19). The first part of the book actually gives you the "tools" to better discuss the issues raised in the chapters of the second part.

At the end of the book there is even a short appendix and sample ethics paper. This section helps the average student who is unfamiliar with the structure and reasoning behind a formal ethics paper.

I especially liked the way some that chapters began with scenarios that helped tie in each ethical theory to dilemmas we face everyday. It made it easier to understand and relate the thoughts of Kant and Aristotle to today's average person and the decisions they make-- their "moral dilemmas" and such.

Bottom line...well-organized, great for undergrads, an excellent source, and you probably use more everyday ethics than you think you do...

Great Resource for Intro Ethics

I choose MacKinnon's 4th edition of this text, while in search of one that would work well for online instruction. I have since moved on to the current edition, which contains a few, but what I consider, significant and useful changes and expansions from the 4th.

For a lower division introductory course in ethics, I've found this text exceptionally useful. From an online perspective, I find it straightforward, clear, and concise. Whether used as the essential core resource, as a structural component from which to build and expand, or as a supplement, I think MacKinnon's text well worth consideration.

I read through quite a number (or as my daughter would say, 'mass quantities') of texts before making the decision to go with MacKinnon. While this text isn't the only resource I use in my courses, I do use it as the framework around which they are designed and built. Highly recommended from this online instructor!

Well Written and Very Complete Book on Ethics

My daughter took an ethics course at a local community college this semester and this book was the textbook. As I was interested, I read along with the class (and even more) as the semester progressed.

The book is broken into 2 main sections: Ethical Theory and Ethical Issues. The first part contains the theory of ethics from a number of standpoints, including Relativism, Egoism, Utilitarianism, Kant's Theories and Natural Law. The second section is filled with discussions of ethical issues of today including pornography, euthanasia, abortion, sexual morality, environmentalism, animal rights, stem cell research and much more.

The book is comprehensive and very well written. It is easy to follow and gives latitude in the areas of ethics that are discussed. Finally, there is a sample ethics paper in the rear, making this a very comprehensive and useful textbook.

Writing about complex ideas is not an easy task, but it is a task worth undertaking. I commend Allen for tackling and dissecting the interconnectedness of the environment and cyber security. Only someone who knows these topics extremely well can explain them in such an incredibly interesting fashion.

Chester Brown is Associate Professor at the Faculty of Law, University of Sydney, and a Barrister. He is also a door tenant at Essex Court Chambers, London, and Maxwell Chambers, Singapore. He has previously worked as Assistant Legal Adviser at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, London, and as Senior Associate in the International Law and International Arbitration Group of Clifford Chance LLP, London.

Kate Miles is a Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Law, University of Sydney. She currently serves on the International Law Association's New Study Group on the Role of Soft Law Instruments in International Investment Law. She is also a Research Fellow of the Centre for International Sustainable Development Law, Montreal, and coordinates the International Investment Law Network for the Society of International Economic Law.

About the Author

Dr. Gerald C. Ubben, Professor Emeritus at the University of Tennessee is author or co-author of many books. Three of these books have been published by Allyn and Bacon/Pearson: The Principal, The Elementary Principals Handbook, and The Secondary Principal's Handbook (1980).� One or more of these books has served the educational administration market each year since 1977. In addition, Dr. Ubben has written frequently in the periodical literature in his field of the principalship, curriculum, and school scheduling. After serving as a social studies/English teacher and school administrator, Dr. Ubben completed a doctorate at the University of Minnesota and taught for many years at both the University of Nebraska and the University of Tennessee in the field of educational administration specializing in the principalship. He currently serves as an elected official on his local school board, a local educational cooperative serving three counties, and a local county education foundation.

Dr. Larry W. Hughes is the author, co-author or editor of numerous books as well.� Four of these books have been published by Allyn and Bacon/Pearson: The Principal, The Elementary Principals Handbook,The Secondary Principal's Handbook (1980) and Public Relations for School Leaders (2000).� He has written extensively in the periodical literature as well, both professional articles as well as popular travel pieces.� Now retired, he had an extensive career as an organizational development consultant to private sector and governmental organizations.� His focuses were team building, problem solving, time management and project planning. He traveled internationally both as a professor and consultant and for recreational purposes s well.� He has his Ph.D. from The Ohio State University and other degrees from the University of Toledo.�� Dr. Hughes is married and the father of three sons.� He has five grandchildren.

Dr. Cynthia J. Norris is author, coauthor or contributor to numerous books, include The Principal. Other notable books include: The Moral Dimensions of Leadership: A Focus on Human Decency (Memphis State University) and The Learning Community: A Model for Developing Educational Leaders (Teachers College Press). She has contributed to the periodical literature on topics such as leadership vision, cohorts as learning communities, and moral and ethical leadership. Dr. Norris retired from both the University of Houston and the University of Tennessee and currently is a Professor of Education at Lincoln Memorial University in Knoxville, Her work in higher education has been distinguished by her contributions to preparation programs as part of the initial Danforth Foundation for the Preparation of School Principals and her pioneer work in the development of the first academic doctoral program at Lincoln Memorial University. Prior to her work in higher education, Dr. Norris had an extensive career in public education where she served as a teacher and director of special education and gifted services. Dr. Norris received her doctorate from the University of Tennessee in the field of educational leadership with a collateral in industrial management. . She has two daughters, one granddaughter and three great-grandchildren.
