Great text!

Kelly has written a text that is thoughtful as well as thought provoking. There are very few authors that actually understand holistic nature of curriculum and the political agendas behind it. Kelly gives an accessible framework to raise questions about the social political nature of any curriculum purchase .. . not only that, but Kelly has a great writing style that makes you want to settle in and devour what you have in front of you. That is a gift!

many typos and sloppy explanations

I taught an undergraduate course on complex analysis using this book several years ago. My choice of the book was partly based on the authors' outstanding reputations as good researchers. The authors make good choices of topics and they are experts in the subject. A casual perusing of this book might leave you impressed, but if you carefully work through the details of this book you will find numerous typographical errors and many explanations are sloppy. The proof of the Cauchy-Goursat Theorem is simply wrong. One of the proofs of a major theorem about Taylor series contained circular reasoning. I found it necessary to provide the students with my own typed lecture notes to replace various section of the book with explanations that weren't so sloppy. If you are looking for a good textbook at the undergraduate level, I recommend finding another book that was more carefully written.

A very good text!
The best description of this book is that it provides a comprehensive, classical treatment of the subject with a modern touch and serves ideally the needs of anyone studying Complex Analysis.
Starting from the foundations of defining a complex number, through to applications in the evaluation of integrals, the WKB method, Fourier transforms and Riemann-Hilbert problems, the book covers a lot of ground in an easy to follow style. The chapters are long, but logically broken down into digestible sections and interspersed with well illustrated diagrams, numerous worked examples and exercises. The end of chapter exercises provide further opportunity for reinforcing the methods and there's a useful section at the end giving brief hints and answers to selected problems.
Complex Variable analysis is treated from the definition of an analytic function and its relation to the Cauchy-Riemann equations, and in turn their application to an ideal fluid flow. The ideas of multi-valued functions, complex integration, and Cauchy's theorem are excellently treated, as are the consequences: the generalised Cauchy integral formula, the Max-Mod principle, and Liouiville and Morera's theorems.
The rest of the first part of this book, which is essentially pure mathematics, deals with Laurent series, singularities, analytic continuation, the Mittag-Leffler theorem, the ALL IMPORTANT Cauchy Residue Theorem, dealing with branch points, Rouche's theorem, and their application to Fourier transforms.
The second half starts off with perhaps the best I have seen on Conformal Mappings and their application to physical problems in Fluid Mechanics and Electromagnetism. Asymptotic evaluation of integrals covers methods like Watson's lemma, the method of steepest descent, and the WKB method.
A good combination of pure and applied mathematics, though the book avoids either the rigour of classical works such as Whittaker and Watson or the marvellously visual presentation of Tristan Needham.
Highly recommended!

Wegener’s granulomatosis is a rare disease, in which the blood vessels and other tissues become inflamed. This inflammation damages important organs of the body by limiting blood flow to those organs and destroying normal tissue. Although the disease can involve any organ system, Wegener's granulomatosis mainly affects the respiratory tract (sinuses, nose, trachea [windpipe], and lungs) and kidneys. This disorder can affect people at any age and strikes men and women equally. It is rare in African Americans compared with Caucasians. Health experts do not know what causes Wegener's granulomatosis. The first symptoms of Wegener's granulomatosis are often vague and frequently include upper respiratory tract symptoms, joint pains, weakness, and tiredness.

The most common sign of Wegener’s granulomatosis is involvement of the upper respiratory tract, which occurs in nearly all patients. Symptoms include sinus pain, discolored or bloody fluid from the nose, and, nasal ulcers. A common sign of the disease is almost constant rhinorrhea (“runny nose”) or other cold symptoms that do not respond to usual treatment or that become increasingly worse. It is important to note that other more common diseases (such as allergies) can produce constant rhinorrhea and Wegener’s granulomatosis is a rare cause of this symptom. Rhinorrhea in Wegener’s granulomatosis results from nasal inflammation or sinus drainage and can cause pain. A hole may develop in the cartilage of the nose, which may lead to collapse (called saddle-nose deformity). The eustachian tubes, which are important for normal ear function, may become blocked, causing chronic ear problems and hearing loss. Bacterial infection can complicate Wegener’s-related sinusitis (inflammation of the sinuses) with congestion and chronic sinus pain. The lungs are affected in most people with Wegener's granulomatosis, although no symptoms may be present. If symptoms are present, they include cough, hemoptysis (coughing up blood), shortness of breath, and chest discomfort.

THE WHITE HOUSE, APRIL 17, 9:52 P.M.

Alan Daniels knocked twice on the door to his boss’s West Wing office, waited a moment for a response—but didn’t get one—then pushed the door open. “You got two minutes?”

The national security adviser already had her purse slung over her shoulder. She let out a long, overly dramatic sigh, then smiled brightly and nodded yes. Julie Fiore liked Daniels. He was her deputy adviser and was loyal and smart. She wanted to get home—her husband was cooking grilled salmon with a honey-mustard glaze, her favorite—but she had two minutes for Daniels. She motioned him across the room.

He laid a thin file folder on her desk. “Elections. Belarus. Early results just came in.”

“They have elections in Belarus?” She grinned mischievously.

“Apparently they do. And as of this morning”—Daniels checked the world clock on his smartphone—“one fifty-three a.m., GMT, they seem to matter.”

Fiore pulled her reading glasses out of her purse, opened the file folder, scanned the single sheet of paper inside, and frowned. “Not possible.”

“And yet”—Daniels thrust two open hands in the air as if to signify that this was something only God could fathom—“there you have it.”

“He’s been reelected four times. They believe in democracy like I believe in unicorns.” She pulled the glasses from the bridge of her nose and rubbed briefly at her eyes with her other hand. She was so tired. “How could this happen?”

“Fairy dust?”

Fiore shot Daniels a grim look.

He straightened up immediately, wiping the smile from his face. “I checked with the CIA five minutes ago. They were blindsided as well. Analysis is going to work on it overnight, lay out scenarios.”

“Good Lord. After Ukraine, this is�.�.�. this is a disaster.�.�.�.” Her voice trailed off as she turned away from her deputy and looked out her window to the darkened North Lawn. She tried to imagine a faraway place, halfway around the world, a building larger than the White House but just as well guarded, bathed in morning sunlight, full of ministers and generals and their counselors, all simultaneously spitting out their coffee in horror. “Over there. You know where.” She pointed up and into the darkness, as if picking a spot on an invisible map that only she and Daniels could see. “They’re having heart attacks right now. Emergency staff meetings and collective heart attacks.”

“Yes, they are. And when they recover from their heart attacks�.�.�.” Daniels paused to consider his words. He might have couched the idea in a diplomatic euphemism, something vague and less threatening, but alone, with his boss, at the end of the day, weary and ever so slightly jumpy from monitoring the globe’s seemingly endless crises, that just didn’t seem appropriate. “They’re going to start killing people. A lot of people.”

Fast paced thriller with an intelligent plot and characters!

Another GREAT Drew Chapman thriller. The second one featuring protagonist Garrett Reilly, a stock trader computer geek, who sees patterns, so when there is something happening worldwide he almost feels it. In this novel, bad things are on the horizon for the USA financial markets and he and his team are there to abort it. A intriguing hero with many faults but also an intriguing innate talent. This novel is a smart plotted adventure which is fast paced and intelligent. Both thoughtful and full of suspense, this book is not to be missed!

“An Unlikely Hero”

This book actually contains Books #1, 2 & 3, which follow the premiere novel, THE ASCENDANT. Garrett Reilly is a financial genius. He sees numbers, and recognizes global bonds and money traffic. He was part of a team in The Ascendant stopping an attack that could have resulted in war, and now it appears terrorists are after him, and planning another attack on the West. In Part 1, the President of the Federal Reserve is assassinated, and his killer names Garrett as the man behind the assassination. In Book #2, the team is up against a mysterious terrorist, while Garrett struggles with his own drug addiction. Book #3 brings THE KING OF FEAR to a conclusion, but only after discovering the terrorist attack may have a personal connection.

I came into the series cold; not having read THE ASCENDANT first, and then was given this edition containing the three novels. Although the writing was good, and the characters interesting, it was a real task finding the book itself interesting. I felt that the main character, Garrett Reilly was hard to believe as the hero. An injury in a bar fight had cracked his skull, leaving him with headaches, and on a lot of pain killers; plus, at times he was filled with paranoia and didn’t know who he could trust. The drugs certainly helped in his confusion. Cyber attacks and hidden power money is a good plot, but I felt we needed a better hero than Garrett to save the world. He could have been the go-to man behind the scenes, but not the front line G-I Joe. Still, readers who like a good thriller will find this series a good read. It just wasn’t of interest for me.

Once again, Bob Gill hits a home run. This is his best book (so far).

As a Professor at Parsons School of Design, I've been using Bob's books in my Introduction to Graphic Design classes for years.

Bob has the remarkable ability to teach both experienced designers and students how to think.

This book focuses on how to develop a concept, the single most important lesson for every designer in every design specialty.

Bob's examples are simple, to the point, brilliant. His writing is funny, thoughtful, totally engaging.

He clarifies the approach to finding solutions for even the most sophisticated design problems.

My students tell me that whenever they are given a new assignment, the first thought they have is "WWBGD" (What Would Bob Gill Do?)

I often ask myself the same question.

recycle for fun and profit

I am a great admirer of Mr. Gill's work and often tout his unique approach to problem re-definition. However, (and I will confess I did not read any fine print describing the content), it's nothing more than a greatest hits compilation. I don't think there's a piece in here that I don't have in one of his previous publications. And this is a profound disappointment. I mean, it ain't cheap, and he must have done something fresh since the last book.

Two stars 'cause I love his work, but three missing because I feel a little cheated. I guess Mr. Gill has to make money somehow, but he should make more of an effort than just recycling his past efforts.

Great survey of Bob Gill's work and his clever design solutions. I'm not actually a fan of Gill's illustration style, I find it too squiggly and childlike, but I enjoy seeing the way his mind works.
