It's two great books in one....Autobiography and reference

This book is beneficial in many ways. One, it is informational for those who are starting their journey from female to male, a good reference book. And secondarily, it provides the reader with personal attributes of how the author made his way along his transition path. And, combining those two elements make it a big help for families/friends of someone who is transitioning FTM, to understand a transguy's experience. It's a quick read that is light and doesn't bog now, but also contains a lot of reference information to have near by when one might need to see a physician/therapist with a question, or purchase gear needed to help with body dysphoria.
The author provided us with a plethora of information that makes it a book you don't just read once and put on the shelf, but have nearby if you have questions or need information about any of the subjects he touched on within the book. It will stand the test of time for this reason.

Good Book on FTM Transitioning

I loved this book! This was a well written and interesting book. It explained a lot of the dilemmas that one must face when deciding to transition (and even the dilemmas one faces when they don't transition). I really liked this book - it was informative and fun to read as well. I read the Kindle edition.

I once read an interview by one of my favorite indie authors, Matt Schiariti, and he listed this book as his all time favorite. I bought this book later on this year, but put off reading it because IT IS OVER 1000 PAGES - OH MAI GAWD!

But, wanting to look cool I decided to give it a try. Honestly, it didn't sound like anything I'd be interested in... so I didn't have any expectations.

And then I started it, and whoa man. I got sucked in.

There's so much drama in this book. Right when you think one thing is resolved, something else pops up. Oh, and I cried. I don't even know how many times. I also lost a lot of sleep.

Despite the amount of pages, I flew through this book.

This takes place over an amount of decades with lots of characters. But they're all written so well, even the ones that only show up for a couple pages, that they are all distinctive. And there are so many intertwined stories, but there wasn't any times where I was confused about what was going on.

After finishing it, I brought it to my dad and told him he has to read it. I very rarely make recommendations to my father. (This is the second book I've told him to read in the last five years.)

Major thing to point out - the woman in this story are ah-may-zing. Yes, it's historical and things were different back then. But they were all written as strong, independent, and Ellen was totally the most sane character in the entire book. My only complaint is that there wasn't enough focus on her.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes drama and has any interest on 12th century England.

"The Pillars of the Earth" takes the reader on a ground level tour of the early Middle Ages... not only the history of the era, but the lives of the ordinary people, their suffering and difficult lives. Aliena, the heroine, suffers the loss of her family and a horrible trauma as a young woman. Her resolves allows her to rise from this shattered life, not once, but several times, each time struck down once more,. seemingly thwarted at every turn. She is an incredibly courageous woman whose perseverance sees her through to the end, and to see the beginning of the end of the savagery from petty rulers and clerics that marked the era.

Jack, her lover and eventual husband, finds his mark as a builder, and the reader sees the evolution of the first magnificent cathedrals of the era, the change of style that enabled these magnificent buildings to soar toward unprecedented heights. We also see how these buildings were constructed by a largely illiterate workforce, using only the most rudimentary tools.

Philip, the prior, faces the contradictions of a Church that attempts to reconcile a life of faith and humility with the temptations of worldly power and wealth. After the murder of Thomas a Becket, he leads a continent-wide rebellion against the unchecked power of the royalty. The book pulls no punches on both the good and evil done by the clerical establishment.

Our modern ideas of liberty and human rights were born in this grimy, brutal era, and I highly recommend this book to all.

My favorite novel ever. You see, taste and smell the action

This is my favorite novel. Lots of subplots. Teaches you more about the history of this time and place than you'd learn in a semester at school.
Twenty years after reading it I still reflect, when I eat a good meal, see a modern supermarket, or reflect on living in a sturdy, well heated dwelling with hot and cold running water and a bath, how lucky we are to live in modern America. Life was very hard in the old days, and this book you really experience that. Also, if you have any interest in building construction, it's fascinating to see how it used to be done way back then.

A fair examination of conservative women

Author Elinor Burkett has a doctorate in History and taught Women's Studies (and other courses) for 13 years before becoming a journalist. Moreover, she describes herself as "a pushy Jewish feminist from New York." One might think, therefore, that her examination of conservative and Republican women would be little more than a scathing critique. Fortunately for us, it isn't.
Burkett examines conservative and Republican women who come from a variety of life situations (rural and urban, rich and poor, etc.) to determine what their views are and why they hold them. Just as the women have a variety of backgrounds, their views are not all the same. With just a few exceptions, Burkett does not let her own views influence her reporting.
Even to the extent that Burkett isn't willing to let go of her liberal feminist view of things, she still seems willing to critically examine that view. This is particularly so when she examines the abortion question and discusses what she sees as the hypocrisy of both sides.
The book doesn't contain any major insights, but it is a fair look at several women who have rejected, in one way or another, the agenda advanced by the feminist elite. For that alone it is worth reading.

Elinor Burkett makes a good attempt to potray conservative women objectively, and while she doesn't always succeed, she's fairly honest about her own biases. Burkett, a liberal feminist, is fairly accepting of the political differences between the conservatives and herself, although at times she can be condescending, as if it's some great revelation that they aren't mindless robots brainwashed by the patriarchy. Also, Burkett seems to think many of the women she interviews are hypocritical since they criticize feminism but also have benefitted from it, when most of their criticism is for the modern radical feminism that has alienated them. Still, this book fills a glaring void, since most books in the women's studies section are about the importance of feminism to women rather than about those women who have no use for it. In addition, it's a fun read I'd recommend to liberals and conservatives alike.

As I opened this book, I was prepared to read a few hundred pages worth of insults geared towards conservative, religious, or otherwise "non feminist" women. I was pleasantly surprised with the fairness and respect that Burkett afforded her subjects.
My only complaint is that the section on religious women in America focused too heavily on "fundamentalist" Christians. An expanded chapter on American Muslims, as well as a chapter on Orthodox Jewish women would have been much more interesting and representative.
It may be asking too much, but it would be nice to see this book, or sections of it, included in women's studies classes. The voice of the conservative woman is too often dismissed, and Burkett's book is a much needed forum.

The author of this book was a U.S soldier in addition to being a well known and highly regarded author on the Apache Wars of the later nineteenth century-in which he was an active participant. He maintained an interest, respect for and in some measure an affection for the Apaches and he also made a serious study of and wrote notable works on their customs and culture. He is perhaps best known for his classic account of the Apache Wars, 'On the Border with Crook.' This small account was written prior to his larger and more expansive work. It originally appeared as a series of articles in the Boston published 'Outing Magazine.' Bourke decided to bring his earlier writings back into print in book form, at a time when the Apaches had once again taken the war trail, to provide the American public with context to then current events. This fascinating account, which centres on the events of the Spring of 1883, concerns Crook's pursuit of the Chiricahua Apaches who broke out of San Carlos reservation to raid through Arizona and Mexico before vanishing into the fastness of the Sierra Madre. Those with any interest or knowledge in this subject will find themselves familiarly introduced to the corps of Apache Scouts, Al Sieber (Zieber), the scout and interpreter, Crook, Gatewood, Chato and of course the renowned Geronimo, as well as other names long associated with this remarkable time in the history of the Apaches and Arizona.
