Great book for a trip with kids!

Adults want to see the typical sights found in guidebooks, many of which bore a kid to tears and thereby make a family vacation as pleasant as dental work. The sights in this book are entirely different, and adding a sprinkling of the attractions found in "Montana Curiosities" to a trip could make the difference between boring and bearable for children or teens.

What would a kid rather visit, statuary in the State Capitol or working player pianos in Nevada City's Music Hall? A picturesque waterfall or Barstool Races? You get the picture.

If you're visiting Montana with youngsters (or maybe even without), do yourself a favor and bring along this book. Even if you visit only one or two of the Curiosities, the kids will enjoy Ednor Theirrault's entertaining descriptions of the available oddities. And a good time will be had by all.

Mom and Dad moved out to MT from NoDak in 1965 - I was 7 at the time. First vivid scary memory was hearing about the Flathead Monster. Left for college in '76 and only back periodically since then, but...man, I've read about 50 pages of this book and am laughing at least once a minute! Mr. Therriault is a terrific writer, a true journalist even, with a keen eye for originality, beauty, and just plain fun. Much of the stuff in here is places I've been - I just never noticed this stuff. Am about to order ten copies just so I can hand them out to some of my DC friends who are forever saying "I'd love to visit Montana." Maybe this will pique their interest. The Treasure State is indeed that, but its greatest gold and silver are the people who live there. Great job Ednor for what I'm sure is going to be more hilarity as I finish the book.

BTW, your photo captions are BRILLIANT!

The bold premise of Smith's anthology is that contemporary lesbian and gay culture did not begin in June 1969 with the Stonewall riots. These 14 essays by "scholars trained as literary critics" do not form a social history, but "employ the methodologies of textual criticism to 'read' the queer iconography" present in much 1960s culture. Smith's contributors cover both obvious subjectsAlesbian pulp novels, the British playwright Joe Orton and Mart Crowley's The Boys in the BandAand surprising ones: Valerie Solanas and the S.C.U.M. Manifesto, Dusty Springfield's career and the homoeroticism of Jim Morrison. Smith's instinct that representations of homosexuality were not only prevalent in 1960s culture but clearly set the stage for the gay liberation movement is persuasive, and her choice of topics expands the parameters of how "queer culture" is conceptualized. At their best, the essays make astonishing, even brilliant associative leaps. In "Give Us a Kiss," Ann Shillinglaw links surrealism and sexual alienation in her dissection of the homoeroticism of the Beatles film A Hard Day's Night. In "Myra Breckenridge and the Pathology of Heterosexuality," Douglas Eisner uses New Left politics and feminism to explicate Gore Vidal's work. Unfortunately, many of the essays are shot through with the jargon of postmodern critical theory ("Solanas's attempt to resignify 'scum' in her manifesto must take into account its previous use by dominant discourses"), which may diminish the readership for this notable collection of essays. The purpose of this study was to determine how the leadership practices and guiding values of a professional learning community affect the nature of the professional relationships among teachers. Three major findings are discussed related to the implementation of PLCs as a means to improve student achievement in low-performing schools. First, implementing PLCs in a low-performing, economically disadvantaged school requires non-traditional leadership. Second, PLCs in economically disadvantaged schools differ markedly from the textbook ideal. And finally, PLCs alone do not affect social mobility for students. Results from this study should prove useful to principals who wish to lead the development of professional learning communities in their districts.

Excellent Source for Professional Learning Communities

Dr. Ricken skillfully characterizes the challenges and successes of two schools as they journey toward becoming professional learning communities(PLC's). He describes the professional learning within communities as these teams engage in continuous improvement and collective responsibility for the purpose of strengthening practice, building capacity, and increasing student performance. He tells the story as the professional learning communities attempt to achieve district and building goals. Five powerful leadership themes emerge in this qualitative study. These themes provide direction for those who are considering becoming professional learning communities. Most notable are the themes addressing shared leadership and the relational nature of influence within a PLC. In addition, Dr. Ricken explores the non-traditional leadership strategies necessary to improve student achievement in economically disadvantaged schools, especially as they strive to establish professional learning communities in challenging times.

Leadership Practices and Values in Professional Learning Communities is an excellent resource for teachers, principals, and other leaders who are considering transforming their schools into professional learning communities. Almost every trail leads in some fashion to the Kincannons—a family with great wealth, skeletons in the closet and a matriarch with tenuous control over her fractious, unstable sons. Ryder and Nautilus make an effective team—until one of them is taken out of action and each has to fight for survival on his own. Kerley has a nice feel for the Gulf area, and his detectives are a couple of aces sharing competence, bravery and camaraderie. (June)

All the cases are connected, but Mobile, Alabama, detectives Carson Ryder and Harry Nautilus aren't sure how. Serial killers are almost compelled by their pathology to commit the same crime again and again, but these murders are dissimilar in forensically significant ways. Meanwhile, as Ryder and Nautilus head-butt various dead ends, Ryder learns that his television reporter girlfriend is being wooed by Lucas Kincannon, the owner of the station and leading son of Mobile's most prestigious, albeit nouveau riche, families. Ryder's distaste for the Kincannon clan, put with a few follow-the-money clues, lands the detectives on a collision course with the city's most powerful forces. Kerley's third Mobile mystery is as compelling as his first two, The Hundredth Man (2004) and The Death Collectors (2005). His plotting is cleverly believable, his protagonists realistically flawed, and his villains utterly but all-too-humanly evil. The Kincannon tribe will have readers casting suspicious glances at whatever powerful families are leading their local charities. Excellent. Wes Lukowsky

A Very Good Thriller

Jack Kerley has come a long way from The Hundredth Man in terms of his style and his ability to draw the reader in and tell an excellent story that is also well crafted. Ryder and Nautilus are dealing with a case that centers around a wealthy Mobile family, the Kincannons, who have a great deal of influence. Influence aside, Ryder has a separate problem with a member of the Kincannon family as he is sleeping with his girlfriend DeeDee. As the mystery deepens and the murders mount Ryder and Nautilus try to figure out a way to deal with a family whose influence makes them hard to touch.

As a reader, when I started the series I was a little doubtful because the first book had some technical issues that rankled me, but as he as progressed his pacing and plotting and gotten so much better. The Death Collectors was a serious step up from The Hundredth Man and with this novel to the improvement is just as noticeable so I am looking forward to seeing what happens to Ryder and Nautilus. Plus, since Ryder gets dumped on average of once a novel, the poor guy, you just have to keep reading them to hope that he'll get a relationship that will stick.

A Different Approach

I guess it is kind of difficult to conjure up a new main character/sidekick combination, but Jack Kerley has done a good job of it. I actually like carson Ryder and care what happens to him in the book. I read this one quickly and enjoyed every page, even if the incarcerated psycho-brother was a bit of stretch (you KNOW we'll see him on the loose someday!)
