Frank Derrick is back, funnier than ever

Last year I had the pleasure of reading The Extraordinary Life of Frank Derrick, Age 81, which I absolutely loved. Imagine my excitement when it was announced that there was going to be a sequel! And what a sequel! I absolutely loved Frank's new adventure in Los Angeles. Within the first couple of pages I was already laughing with Frank's antics. It felt like catching up with an old and dear friend.

Frank's preparation for his big journey are hilarious. From when he goes to get his photo taken for the passport to his shopping the best garments to blend in in Los Angeles (you wouldn't even find those colourful and loud shirts in Hawaii), all of it had me giggling non-stop. But the best part is when he lands in LA (with Bill the cat on tow) and we meet his family, his daughter who is recovering from cancer and his grand-daughter, a lively girl who instantly connects with his cool grand-father.

Put Frank Derrick in a such a crazy place like LA and you get the most fun, entertaining but also moving story. It was really interesting to discover the city through Frank's eyes. He is like a child with a new pair of shoes, excited about everything. He really fits in this environment and sees himself leaving behind good old England for sunny America.

But the story is not all laughs and giggles. As with the first book, J.B. Morrison reminds us that life is fragile and we need to appreciate the little things. Frank, even with the spirit of a younger man, is now 82 and not as fit as he would like. During the book, there are some really moving moments that make you connect with this character even more. I really hope Frank touches as many lives as possible as he is such a unique and special character.

Definitely a story to enjoy this summer, Frank Derrick's Holiday of a lifetime will leave no one indifferent. A highly recommended read!

A true delight to lose myself within!

I've been dying to revisit Frank Derrick, ever since reading The Extra Ordinary Life of Frank Derrick, Age 81 back in 2014 (you can find my review here). Despite thoroughly enjoying being introduced to Frank Derrick in his first novel, I found that Frank Derrick's Holiday of a Lifetime had me laughing and snorting just that little bit more, so much so that my partner had to tell me to 'be quiet' because he was trying to get to sleep and I was crying tears of laughter into my pillow. The more I tried to contain my amusement, the worse it became.

As you can probably guess from the title Frank Derrick's Holiday of a Lifetime follows Frank as he takes his first ever flight to America, more specifically to Los Angeles, to spend time with his troubled daughter Beth and his clever granddaughter Laura. After having loved Frank's first story, along with his hilariously funny antics and matter-of-fact yet amusing way of speech, I couldn't wait to see what scenarios Frank would be faced with next. Frank's views on the world, on cold-callers and window cleaners, as well as his neighbours and the local charity shop's staff, had me absolutely roaring with laughter. I believe that what Frank says is what a lot of people think but wouldn't actually say out loud. Along with his passive-faced cat, Bill, Frank really was the most genuine, side-splitting, and completely down-to-earth character that I immensely enjoyed spending time with. I loved travelling with Frank, being beside him when he stepped onto American soil, hearing his reactions when seeing everything that Los Angeles had to offer for the very first time. It was just such a pleasing, delightful way for me to be reintroduced to Frank since leaving him the last time, and I had a feeling, almost as soon as I began reading, that what lay ahead would most definitely leave me smiling.

Despite the constant laughs, there was a serious undertone to Frank's adventures in Frank Derrick's Holiday of a Lifetime. This time round, Frank's daughter Beth is recovering from cancer, as well as dealing with a break-up, and all in all, she's going through a hell of a lot and could quite clearly do with some support. We're also told more about Frank's wife Sheila who passed away, and the memories Frank thinks about are incredibly touching, also emphasising how alone he really is. I found it difficult not to find Frank endearing, despite his outspoken thoughts. It moved me to think of the time before Frank became alone, when he was surrounded by his family and had a companion in his wife. I was thrilled when the thought of going to Los Angeles hit Frank, and cheered him on towards making his final decision in doing so. Beth needed him, his granddaughter Laura had a plan, and I didn't want Frank to be alone any longer.

I absolutely loved Frank's time spent in Los Angeles. It added such a fantastically upbeat and exciting tone to the book, and I adored how much he wanted to stay when it came to flying back home. It was a completely different world in Frank's eyes, and his opinions on everything that he saw had me giggling constantly. Frank's dress sense and long, white hair only added to my love for him, and I wanted desperately for him to experience everything that he possibly could, all with his family beside him. It wasn't only an adventure for Frank, it was an adventure for me to, and one of my favourites, come to think of it.

All in all, Frank's Holiday of a Lifetime was fantastic! Full of new and exciting places for Frank to visit, and moments that had my eyes brimming with tears, this was a true delight to lose myself within. Keep an eye out for the woman who works in the charity shop, by the way, with the south-west eyes!

Another heart-warming read

Frank Derrick’s Holiday of a Lifetime is the second book in the Frank Derrick series, and the third novel by British author, J. B. Morrison (aka musician Jim Bob). Frank Derrick is eighty-two and a half. A widower whose last friend died eighteen months ago, he lives with Bill, his cat, in the only house with stairs in Fullwind-on-Sea. His daughter Beth rings him regularly, if not often, from Los Angeles, and they keep in touch by email when Frank gets to the library.

But the latest phone-call has Frank worried: not only has Jimmy (the only decent fellow that Beth ever dated) left her, but Beth has lump in her breast. Beth tries to reassure her father that every will be OK, and Frank just can’t afford to visit her in America. But then he is given chance, and jumps at it: after all, it may be the last time he sees his daughter.

In the lead up to his holiday of a lifetime, his twenty-year-old granddaughter, Laura keeps him posted on her mother’s condition and moods by email, and tries to enlist him in her grand plan: to reunite Beth and Jimmy. He’s not sure her methods will be effective, but he can’t fault her intentions.

This book is set some 18 month after The Extraordinary Life of Frank Derrick, Aged 81, and Morrison gives the reader enough recap that it can be read as a stand-alone. Whereas the first book concentrated mainly on Frank’s plight after his accident, this one fills in some of his back story: the reader learns a lot more about his wife, Sheila, about Beth, Laura and Jimmy.

Again, Frank’s observations about ageing are both insightful and humorous: “He was eighty-two years old. He had to scroll down to the very bottom of the drop-down menus on the auction website that he’d registered on to find his year of birth. He was almost too old to be considered alive or at least to be using the Internet”. He refers to all those bothersome salespeople who ring his doorbell as “door-to-door spam”.

Frank is still giving people he encounters (amusing) Sioux names; his passage through check-in and security at the airport is hilarious; the remarks he imagines that Bill would make, if only he could speak, are sardonic; his inner monologue is filled with dry wit; and his manner of dealing with the telemarketer who rings Beth’s house is laugh-out-loud funny.

In addition to plenty of humour, Morrison’s tale has moments of sadness and also reminds the reader of the importance of communication with those we love and care about. Another heart-warming read that will have readers wondering if there is more to come for Frank Derrick.

I want to make it clear that I'm no sell out, no bitter bitch who secretly wants to see a certain chapter burned to the ground; no ex sorority prospect turned religious; no victim vilifying my past experiences in hopes of garnering sympathy; nor am I a starving author in search of a paycheck. I'm a writer. That's it. I chose to write this book as an act of closure, a way to express my feelings, and a way to say goodbye to the person I used to be.

A Sorority Memoir!

Wow. A true story from a young woman about trying to get into a sorority. It has excellent detail, humor, sorrow, college life, and lots of drama. This is a must read for anybody, especially young ladies, ages 15-25. Or parents of any teens. Captain Of My Soul is a great book club pick and discussion novel for families.

Whitney wrote a very vulnerable, honest, funny and courageous account of what happened during her college life. I applaud her memoir and hope others will, too.

Wow!!!

Great book. To be honest, I was expecting this book to come from the perspective of a disgruntled reject who played the victim. After reading, I suggest it to anyone unsure of their reasons for pursuing membership into one of these organizations. I appreciated that the author did not minimize all of Greek life, but more shared her personal experience. Also, I liked that she did not equate her specific experience to the organization as a whole. I couldn't put this book down!!

Hard to put down--even when characters are verbally pelted with putdowns.

I started and finished reading this book over the course of three days. I'd never considered pledging in a Greek social sorority, and while I'm five years out of college, I could completely envision the campus situation. Whitney Gracia Williams's story took me right back to memories of a similar campus with a small black Greek population, and shed some light on an extreme, an "extra" (to use the author's word) section of a chapter. I think that the need for secrecy and "discretion" in most [all] aspects of this pre-pledging life led to the girls involved wanting to do everything they could not to disturb the status-quo and risk their presumed chances of being picked to "cross over" in the future. It was a very weird and strange mentality to have for those of us who are reading Whitney's story, but I'm sure in varying degrees we may have all had similar experiences of not wanting to "rock the boat" because of our belief that "good things come to those who wait"...or are patient or strong-willed.

It really was hard to get through all of the sludge (I can't think of a better word at the moment) that the ten girls were going through, but the story was never uninteresting. The reader sees Whitney's gradual change from a bit of a crazy-pledge-scoffer to gotta-get-through-this (WILL-get through-this) personality to an "awakened" individual again. I recommend this memoir to any person who's interested in pledging Greek--or learning more about the extremities to which some chapters go. There are plenty of script-like dialogues and (eyeball-rolling, eyebrow-raising) emails to read aloud to anyone who'll care to listen. Some are downright funny, and some are downright disturbing--as in, "What are these [so-and-so's] thinking??" Going over some of the scenes again (either alone or with others) really emphasizes how hard it is to follow logic when your gut and eyes and previous experiences to certain stimuli or people encourages following along without verbalizing your questions to the "people in charge."

I think that the ultimate message this book left with me is that our actions or inactions to events powers whatever "strengths" those seemingly in charge have over us. This is an extreme example, but it a tribal culture considers purple rocks (or even purple bottle caps!) to be their currency of choice, the average paper money a "civilized" visitor wants to use for trade may not work so well for them unless it's of some use to that native people. So when others come to believe that purple bottle caps rock or colored paper rocks, the items will have some worth. For a lot of non-Greeks (myself included), letters have no real importance to me right now. They don't affect my life one way or the other. So while we all may have our versions of "gotta have it! Greek letters" (be they red high tops or a DDS or Esquire at the end of one's name, or certain tatoos on each hip), there may or may not be a limit to how far we'll go to achieve that goal. It's best to feel happy with the definition of yourself before setting your heart of achieving a certain "status." Because you may still feel empty once that status has been achieved, and then what will all that suffering and sacrifice have been for?

Many of us may never know how we'd react in a similar situation in the circumstances described for the author and some of her friends, but we can definitely imagine. I can only hope that I'd do my best to take the high road as well. Read Whitney's story. Follow her personal journey and decide for yourself what you might do.

Fifth Circuit: “Section 83(a) explains how property received in exchange for services is taxed.” (See Montelepre Systemed, Inc. v. Comm’r of IRS, 956 F.2d 496, 498 (CA5 1992)).

Second Circuit: “At the heart of this case is I.R.C. � 83 [Tax Code � 83], which governs the taxation of property transferred in connection with the performance of services.” (See Gudmundsson v. US, 634 F.3d 212 (CA2 2011)).

Anyone who is forced to pay federal taxes NEEDS to see the IRC statute that specifies how one is to tax 'compensation
for services' and realize that the IRS is hiding this information from the public's view, so as to tax us unlawfully!!

Section 83 is everyone's saving grace, in that your 'wages' are NOT 'income', because 'income' is PROFIT OR GAIN,
NOT 'wages'!!! David Myrland has de-coded this IRC Section 83. It proves that we have ALL been denied the statutorily-
protected provisions of Sections 83, 212, 1001, 1011 and 1012!! Most ALL CPA's haven't a clue about these provisions,
either!!

The 1040 Form goes right to Section 61(a) (which deals with 'income') and has NO provision to utilize the protections
of Section 83!!

I never saw so much research to back up a single point made by any other author. David has clearly done his homework. The courts are clear. The law is clear. The author is super clear! Section 83 is 'the law' which should provide tax freedom to most employee wages and other compensation in exchange for labor, which includes most everybody! Everyone needs to have this book. Read it, understand it and then 'Use' it!

Good book for history fans

Very good story. The first part of the book takes a long time to validate that there was a history of using quilts by the slaves. But once it got past that, there is fascinating information about the slave community and their culture and how they adapted their occupations in Africa to their new (and horrible) environment. Great story about the ingenious way they used the quilts to communicate. Good book for history fans.

Simon Zutshi is a financially independent, professional property investor with almost two decades of experience investing in residential property in the UK and overseas.Simon started investing in 1995 when, as a first time buyer and a recent graduate in debt, he found a strategy to purchase his first property (his home) using none of his own money. By renting out the spare rooms, he was able to cover the mortgage payments and effectively live for free! Caught by the property bug, Simon started to buy more property and, by the age of 32, he was financially independent due to the passive income generated from his property portfolio. Since an early age, Simon has been interested in the art of magic. He started to perform professionally at the age of 15 and became a member of the world famous Magic Circle in his early 20’s. Simon has often said that investing in property draws many parallels with magic, in that once you know the secret, what seemed impossible before is simple to achieve. This was really enlightening. I wish it had gone even more in depth, but it provides eye-opening info and easy to understand cures for stalled relationships. An absolutely stellar read; and a great springboard for more research into our many "selves".

Can't complain

This book was short, sweet, and to the point; so just my style. It had a few really good points that have got me thinking.. I went into reading this book hoping it would give me ideas to help change my long-term boyfriend, but after reading it, I realized that there are many things that both of us would benefit from by changing.

A Deeper Understanding of Relationships

Astra Niedra points out the fact that most people do not experience the relationship of their dreams. The truth is most of us have never been taught how to have a good relationship. We learn from our mistakes and often give up before happily ever after can happen. As Astra explains it: "Each relationship provides an opportunity for us to grow and become more conscious."

In this book Astra Niedra provides ten steps that show the way to a better relationship. I was very interested in her explanation of how we are attracted to others because of what we have disowned in ourselves. Opposites really do attract in most cases.

Astra Niedra writes in a caring conversational style. I felt like I was talking to a good friend who was guiding me towards a more fulfilling relationship. This book will help you honor and respect your partner.

The only thing I would caution you about is one of the steps that talks about leaving the person you love. Staying and working things out might be best for your character development. I know all relationships can't last forever and I think this chapter is best for people who are not married yet. It might help someone not make a mistake and marry the wrong person. Even though this book seems to be mostly for people who are in a committed relationship.

Needs better quality control (Publisher)

I found tons of grammatical errors and some of the examples did match cli images. Minor oversights really, but the amount of these errors is extremely frustrating. The book contains excellent reference material and is quite good.

Simply Fantastic but not without issues

I have given this tomb 5 stars because the information it contains is brilliant. As a previous reviewer has stated, there are numerous annoying errors both in the diagrams and in writing. Whilst this is annoying and does detract from the book it is still worthy of 5 stars, its information is just that good. It covers all aspects of the SRX in fantastic detail and makes it very easy to understand.
There are some great hints and tips covered throughout the book.
I work with both the Branch and Data Center SRX platform every day and this book has taught me a great deal. It has increased my knowledge not just on the SRX but on Junos as a whole.
If you are learning or working with the SRX then I highly recommend this as a study source or simply a reference to have on your desk at all times.

Content was excellent but the fact that the authors had to constantly refer to an administrator as a "she" was absolutely irritating. Rather than take a complete PC direction how about trying an ambiguous approach with referring to the third party as "they".
