Superb!

This is a wonderful book about classical music! It is better than wonderful. Disclosure: Jan Swafford is a friend of mine from the early 1970s. Back when he was teaching high school music, he developed a reputation for being a great writer. Great. His career became teaching music at the college level (Harvard undergrad, Yale PhD), composing music, and writing. He has written biographies of Charles Ives, Brahms, and Beethoven, all well received, as well as a guide to classical music. But first and foremost he has taught music for nearly 40 years. This book is a highly readable, brief history of classical music. It gives short and fascinating biographies of the major composers from each each era, and a listening guide to selected pieces from each composer. Even while not listening to the music, those guides are good reading. I suspect even serious, well-read music aficionados will enjoy this fast read. For those of us who like to casually listen to the classics, but know little about the music or composers, it is a real treat. This book would be a great way to begin a study of the classics at home, which is what I plan to do. Jan's enthusiasm is contagious. Highly recommended.

The Biblical Christian's secret weapon!

I had the privilege of viewing Glenn Arekion interviewed by Sid Roth on the 'It's Supernatural' streaming Internet video. I was impressed with his testimony and tangible amazing results of praying in divine languages. Although I received my prayer language in 1978, I found that I seldom entered into this unique form of prayer unless a crisis arose. It always lead to a sense of peace, and wisdom to deal with whatever the issue may have been; truly remarkable.

With this book and another by Dave Roberson entitled "The Walk of the Spirit, The Walk of Power", I have found strong encouragement to pray in tongues daily to build myself up spiritually, as well as to be used of GOD in 'secret' prayer for the needs of many others throughout the world. This in no way diminishes my responsibility to pray specifically in English and Spanish for needs that become apparent, but when we get to the end of ourselves and our limited understanding of the ultimate reality of situations, needs, and circumstances- praying in tongues takes it to the next level.

I initially came from a 'cessationist' background in theology that denied the contemporary reality of tongues. Thankfully our Lord Jesus Christ revealed the truth: the only one who wants to rob the children of the Kingdom of this incredible blessing is the adversary of our souls- because it does serious damage to him and his forces of darkness. Read these books and become an anointed member of the Holy, Royal, Warrior-Priesthood. Best book on tongues in my opinion

Best book on the reasons why we should pray in tongues. It gives Biblical references for each point so it's not just the author's viewpoint. Praying in tongues is the perfect prayer because it comes with no doubt or fear, since it bypasses the natural mind. Praying in tongues with other believers is as unified as it gets on earth. And we cannot pray outside of God's will when it comes from our spirit which has been made 100% new in Christ Jesus. Get the book, and pray~! Your future depends on it~!

This book was awesome!!! I love how she described everything in detail and took everything from the horses point of view. I read this book and Sierra in the same day!!!! I am telling all horse lovers to read this book!!! It is about Bontia, a stable horses, who is set free by her owner, Maria, because Maria is afraid that the soldiors, from the war, will capture her. Bonita is captured then by solidors and they use her for the war, when she finally gets free, she meets up with Paco, a donkey, and they become friends. Then Paco and Bonita find Rapheal, a wild stallion and they begin roaming with him. I won't tell you the whole book, but something happens to Rapheal. That's all I am going to tell you, but READ THIS BOOK!!

Read in Elementary School, still love it

I'm not ashamed to admit that I still like this book even as a college student. I loved any book involving horses or animals in any way when I was younger and this was one of my favorites. Of the whole series, Bonita was always my favorite. Its a bit of a sadder story than the others but I find it to be very interesting and entertaining to a young horse lovers mind.

The prospect of peace, through the resolution or transformation of conflict, threatens to unsettle the stability and consistency of self-narratives, and their associated routines and habits at the individual, group, and state levels.

The contributors argue two key points: 1) that ontological insecurity may set in motion political and social processes that reproduce and reactivate conflicts; 2) that coping with peace anxieties necessitates the formulation of alternative self-narratives at the individual, societal, and state levels that re-situate the Self in relation to Other and to the world at large. Consequently, the book analyses the ways in which, and the conditions under which, conflict resolution induces ontological insecurity, and the different ways in which ontological insecurity has prevented the successful culmination of peace processes in different conflict contexts, including Cyprus, Israel-Palestine and Northern Ireland.

This book will be of much interest to students of critical security studies, conflict resolution, peace and conflict studies, social theory and IR in general.

Realistic and Effective

Joe's book fits its intention: it provides a written model for those busting to burst out of the mediocrity of society. With all of the processes, and examples, Joe hits the nail on the head when pointing out that it is in following our passion, inspiration, and thus our personal truth, that we find our greatness. The pitfalls and dangers, as well as the breathtaking joys of doing so, are well documented.

There are many "greats" that Joe uses as example. But be warned - they were already highly evolved beings and were all: truthful, pure in intention, honest to themselves, capable of detachment, of listening to their inspiration and intuition, and of living in the moment, and these are not common qualities. BUT, the great news is that if you have picked up this book your level of consciousness has already undergone a shift, it has expanded and you will be on your way to join them. However, quite rightly as Joe points out, it can be a long and lonely road depending on the above qualities you already possess, or not.

As lovely as it would be to think that Joe's book would reach the hands of everyone and they would then change, that is not possible. It is definitely the case that the more of us who evolve, expanding our levels of consciousness, impacts on others. What I wouldn't want ANYONE to do is believe that if they think something enough or hope something enough, that it will come to fruition. The type of similar thinking, that is behind such books as The Secret is hugely flawed to the majority of people. Follow Joe's advice and you will be greatly aided in a very REAL way towards your transformation, success and personal fulfilment.

Laurus has created a wonderful art book that takes the reader through his personal step by step process. This book has detailed information that can help other other artists create similar mural art and illustrations. All supplies are listed as well as technique. It is clear that his murals transform small and large buildings as well as interior walls, into notable artwork that catches the eye and brings a smile to the viewer's face. A new unique concept of romance with amazing characterizations

The gripping opening line narrated by Ramona above starts this unique story of how in love everything is possible in this latest YA contemporary by Laura Nowlin. Having read her heart-wrenchingly amazing book If He Had Been with Me before, I was beyond excited to pick this up as my closing read last year. Laura wrote a very, very good romance and I was giddy to devour another one from her in this book. She did give me what I expected, but in the most unexpected way.

(Synopsis)
When Ramona met Sam for the first time on the first day of school, she already knew that Sam would have the name Sam. And it would be the name that she’d etch in heart for years after. It was. But Sam was her best-friend, like her best-friend with capital best. Ramona knew better than taking the risk of ruining their friendship of years by admitting her feeling to him. They’d been best-friends for too long and been making awesome music together. What else could she want more than that? And it’s not like he felt the same way to her.
Yet he did.
Sam could not not look at Ramona whenever she’s on her element―the drum. And he knew that it’s more than just a casual admiration for her. It’s more. Way more. But Ramona was his best-friend. That kind of friend that you’d been way too comfortable with you could care less about keeping image around them. And though she’s the reason he played music, Sam realized that being in a band with Ramona was everything. Together they made a perfect band; but a perfect couple? Cool girl like Ramona would probably tell him from the start if she ever thought of making a perfect couple with him. But she didn’t. So she wasn’t, he thought.

This Song Is (Not) For You is a unique story of teenagers of three who got tangled in love and friendship. In this book, Laura Nowlin brings up a quite fresh concept of love between three friends without necessarily messing it up into a sickening love triangle. While some people might find this concept odd and slightly inept, I’m sure more people would say it’s something possible and even think of it as sweet arrangement because Laura did a great job building the romance between each character. I, personally, still did not know where my opinion stands about this kind notion of romance in this book. I somehow still couldn’t get my mind around it since I’m a firm believer of love as an exclusive tie between two hearts. But part of me honestly thought that This Song Is (Not) for You has a really well-written romance and friendship.

Told in three different perspectives, this book clearly shows that each character, the three of them, all play the same important roles to the story. Ramona is a quirky girl with deep passion in music. She plays drum and piano, and she loves both instruments equally. What are the odds though that she would love people in the same way she did her music? When usually I feel weird of people who could love more than one person at the same time, Ramona’s character didn’t bother me when she did exactly that. The feeling she had for Sam was built very deeply that we could feel it stays strong even when she grew another one for Tom.
Sam is probably my most favorite character of all. He’s pretty cool with his feeling I might say. That he loved Ramona, yet didn’t want to say it in case it’d ruin their friendship. But when another man came to the picture, he didn’t do some alpha-male drama boys usually do in romance book to claim Ramona as his considering he’d known her first and longer. He’s clear with his own wants. Yes he played music because of Ramona. But he wasn’t blind of the fact that music isn’t everything he wants to do in life. So he pursued his own passion while enjoyed making music with his best-friends. I liked that about him a lot. His non-judgmental personality is really sweet and that’s the very thing that made me love him the most. The way he let Ramona did things her way sometimes, the way he accepted Tom to the group, the way his opinion shifted from indifferent to slightly jealous to actually coming up with the idea that becomes the whole point of this book shows that Sam is one of those rare people with a very good heart and open mind. And that scene when he confessed his feeling, quick and simple and has a bit spur-of-the-moment feel…goodness, I loved it so much!

Meanwhile, Tom’s character is what I would call a free soul. His love for music, art, and freedom, and the way his do-gooder personality often slipped into his works are genuine. I was surprised when I read the part saying he’s actually an asexual person because honestly it’s the first time I hear about such type. It only made this book even more unique in my eyes. And the asexuality layer just strengthened his whole free persona even more. Tom’s character kind of reminded me on a particular quote that I really love. I found it years ago and had taken a liking of it right away but honestly didn’t quite know what it truly means. Until now.
Tom’s character made me realize just how exactly a free soul would be like. I mean, they don’t have to be exactly like Tom. But they could be someone who could make people feel like Ramona and Sam when they’re near Tom. I’m really glad that I read this book because I’ve been searching for the meaning of this quote for a long time now and here, Laura, made me understand it in one easy way through Tom. What an experience I had here!

This Song Is (Not) for You presents a picture perfect of how a girl and two boys could build love and friendship without abandoning any of them out of the group. It’s definitely not a shallow young romance and I personally think people needs to be open minded to really get the point of this story. Guess I kind of failed to do it but I think I’ll read it again and will probably change my mind later. For now, though, I’m still enjoying the friendship more than the romance.

I don’t really have any book comparison with this one but those who enjoy David Levithan and John Green’s books might find this book endearing.

This Song Is (Not) For You tells the story about a boy and a girl who are in a band together and they love each other but they haven't told each other how they feel. One day they meet another boy and invite him to join the band and Ramona (the girl) falls in love with Tom (the new guy).

There was so much I expected to happen in this novel that didn't happen. I expected the characters to struggle a lot more with their emotions which never happened. There were also certain things that happen near the end of the book and the author doesn't really give much of an explanation for those events. I felt like there wasn't any buildup at all, just things happen and that is that.

I did enjoy the fact that the author told the story from all three of the main characters points of view, however it fell kind of flat at times or there were times the story was being told from Sam's ( the first boy) perspective and I felt like I was in Ramona's head instead. There was almost no character development at all, at least in my opinion.

One other good thing about this book is that it is a quick read and could probably be read in a day or two.

I know my review has been kind of vague but there isn't really much I can say without giving away the whole entire novel. Honestly I didn't like it, I felt like there was so much more that could have happened or things that could have been explained better.

I am giving this book 2/5 Stars because even though it was a quick read, there were things that were left unexplained and none of the characters seemed to develop over the course of the novel.

An excellent and unique read

I've been roped into reading quite a few YA novels in my adulthood, but while the others felt like a chore, I couldn't put this book down! Love triangles seem to be a very common trope in the YA genre, but this book handles it in a very different way. I loved the alternating POV style, as it gave great insight into the mind of each character. They were each fleshed out so well throughout the book that I felt like I personally knew them. The themes of art, activism, avant-garde music, polyamory, and asexuality made this such a unique read, especially for the YA genre. I think this book has the potential to open up the mind of any young person to ideas they otherwise might not have had any exposure to. I can see some parents disapproving of their kid reading this due to some of its nontraditional themes, but I think it's important for young people to be exposed to different views. All-in-all, it was an excellent read that I would recommend to young and older audiences alike!
