About the Author

Jim Blythe is Visiting Professor of Marketing at University of Plymouth, UK. Jim Blythe has been a Merchant Navy officer, a ladies hairdresser, a business consultant, a rock musician, a truck driver, a company director and an award-winning playwright all before becoming an academic – he always planned on having a varied life and likes learning new skills. Currently he is trying to learn to grow vegetables (with limited success...), but he has a pilot’s licence and has learned to play drums in a samba band, so the beat goes on.

Jim has written 18 books, over 50 journal articles, and has contributed chapters to 8 other books. He has taught overseas, written open-learning packs for international training organisations and has been a Senior Examiner for the Chartered Institute of Marketing.

His next venture is to study for a degree in modern languages – having left school at 16 he thinks it’s time to get the education he missed out on. He holds four real degrees (including one fake), and therefore feels somewhat irritated that he is mainly known for winning the Cardiff heat of the TV show, Come Dine With Me. Each page features the siblings' ongoing story, cartoonlike illustrations with dialogue balloons, and yellowed guidebook pages that provide basic background information about the period. The stories are full of slapstick, but hold together well and involve readers. Though the plots are contrived to tie into the guidebooks, they don't seem forced and the flow is good. The guides are written in a breezy style, paying just enough attention to the grosser aspects of each civilization to help maintain interest. Slavin's sunny pen-and-ink and watercolor illustrations are packed with details. Kids are sure to devour these lively books.

Bailey delivers not only a fast-paced story but also a fun way to convey information about Egyptian lifestyles, religion, and schools, and, of course, the pyramids and mummies. To know that you know of the secrets of this cosmic creation, is as sublime as the exquisite chalice from which we both sipped the fruits of our oneness. These books tell of great times written from afar and yet unknowingly so near. The author has a thirst for truly exploring among the layers of strata from which our legacy is stored. Steve Cotter draws from a diverse background as a champion athlete and cutting-edge trainer in developing some of the most exciting programs in strength and conditioning today. Great book on kettlebell training

If you are looking for a book on Kettlebell training, this is a good one to pick up. I've been using a kettlebell off and on for two years now, mainly just using the swing. Cotter offers basic, intermediate, and advanced exercises that will give you more bang for your kettlebell buck. You can really do a complete workout and be ready to go.

Least favorite thing: Don't have two kettlebells . . . to do everything that he offers in the book you need multiple kettlebells.

Most favorite thing: Love the routined workouts at the end that target specific types of sports and athletes. Not comprehensive, but a great start.

Effective Primer for Beginners, Advanced, and Athletes

Steve Cotter's Kettlebell Training is a comprehensive kettlebell guide full of clear, professional-quality photographs. In the introduction he explains the advantages of kettlebells over dumbbells and barbells (leverage, grip, high-rep position, etc.). He explains why a weight belt is good for kettlebell training (imagine doing 10 minutes straight of kettlebell clean and jerks, for example).

He explains many safety techniques including warm-ups and the importance of chalk so that your grip doesn't slip.

For me, the most important part is the correct squat technique in which you practice without a kettlebell while keeping your back vertical. You do this facing a wall so that you don't lean into the wall. Then you can do the correct squats and kettlebell swings without a wall in front of you while still keeping your back vertical AT ALL TIMES. Before I did my squats, deadlifts, and swings correctly, I tweaked my back 3 times, each time not being able to walk for a week. Since using the correct technique, which I first learned watching a Bob Harper kettlebell DVD, I have not hurt my back.

After the safety and warm-up section, there are exercises for beginners, intermediate, advanced, custom programs, and sport-specific workouts.

The only limitation of this finely produced book in my experience is that it is better, in the absence of a professional instructor guiding you through the moves, to use videos and it's more clear to see "bodies in action" than to read instructions with still photos.

Nevertheless, Kettlebell Training is a comprehensive guide for the beginner and advanced trainer alike.

After reading two favorable reviews I purchased this book for my Kindle (Please Amazon publish more Anesthesia texts on Kindle). I quickly read through this book realizing early that the depth of the text was on par with medical student level education. If the "Baby Miller" (Miller and Soelting's Basics of anesthesia) is held as the the basic text for CA1 (Clinical Anesthesia year 1) residents, then this book falls far far short. Any CA1 or even intern depending on this book to get them introduced to anesthesia is behind the power curve and needs to reconsider their chosen profession. On the other hand medical students who would like an introduction to the basics of anesthesia may want borrow this book from the library.

An excellent introductory textbook

As an anesthesia resident, I was looking for an introductory text to provide a solid foundation for my first year of training. This book fits the bill. I get bogged down pretty easily by certain texts, but this book is easy to read and understand. Would also recommend to short timers in aneshesia (medical students rotating for weeks or months) as it focuses on key topics without too much minutia.

Excellent introductory book with surprising depth

I have read both the paperback and Kindle version of this book. I found it to be excellent pre-reading prior to my first stint in anaesthesia (as an ICU trainee), and have referred back to it quite often. It is easy to read, and gives an excellent broad overview of how to give a good anaesthetic. The depth was just right - i learnt more than I expected regarding areas such as the circle system from this book, which made life much easier on my first day on the job. Highly recommended.

True to the test, concise, error-free, language is student-friendly, BEST book for learning AP Chem content

From the perspective of an AP student:
This book is fantastic in preparing you for the exam, or for tests in an AP chemistry class. I used it for both, and it did it's job well for both. I will update with my AP score (I am more than confident that I earned a 5) later.
This book is to the point on all topics. It tells you exactly what you need to know to solve the problems and explain the concepts (the topic and test aren't all math-based, after all) on both the MC and FRQ sections of the test, and IT MAKES SENSE.
This book is perfect for learning and/or reviewing the content, and I would recommend it to someone who's already on track for a 5 who wants to review to ensure their score, or someone who is facing the threat of a 1 and needs to learn as much as possible as efficiently as possible.
It has a few practice problems at the end of (almost) each chapter (the extent of these problems depends on how much content was covered in the chapter) that are great for checking your understanding.

HOWEVER, this book does not offer enough practice problems to be sufficient alone for anyone self-studying (or anyone intent on improving their score through lots of practice rather than only reading to understand the content). STILL BUY THE BOOK; just pair it with lots of practice problems. Learnerator.com offers a great multiple choice question bank that's FREE for easy and medium questions (difficult questions cost $10 I think: you can complete some of the free questions before deciding whether or not to pay for the difficult questions) ( [...]. Also FREE, college board's apcentral website with released FRQ portions of past AP chemistry exams with grading keys and more. This is the best resource for FRQs because they are all written by the company that writes the test you will take: same difficulty and representations of different topics. Use the current test format questions ( [...] as well as old test format questions ( [...], as they are very similar. They test almost all the same content with minor exceptions (the new exam covers a little less breadth of material, so don't stress when you don't understand organic chemistry or other topics like that on the old questions).
For other paid materials and books check out the Princeton Review book; it has good explanations of the topics (a little wordier than Crash Course, but still easily understandable), and it has *lots* of good problems after each chapter and 2 full-length tests, so that's a strong contender. The D&S marketing AP chemistry book has good practice problems that reinforce the concepts well and provide thorough repetition (although you must buy in quantities of 10+ so it should only really be purchased by teachers for classes). I would not recommend the 5 steps to a 5 500 practice problems book, as it is plagued by errors. I have not seen the Sterling test prep book, but it is dedicated to questions and answers, so that may be a good bet to pair with the mostly content-dedicated Crash Course book.

Overall: BUY THIS BOOK for AP chemistry: it's the best book out there for content-learning. Just remember to pair it with some extra practice.

This book is updated!!

I received this book on Friday and have not had a chance for my students to look through it. However, I was thrilled to see that it is indeed updated for the new test format. Most of the study books are not. This book is written by an experienced AP Chem teacher, with many tips for students throughout the sections. This is one book that I will recommend to my students.

Not too overwhelming

Great study book it helped so much in studying for the AP chem exam! I find the amount of information to be less overwhelming than some other study books I've used for other subjects. The chapters are short, but have just about everything you need to know with a few practice questions at the end of each chapter with explanations. I did find it a little strange that there was not a section about electrochem, but there was only one question on that topic on the AP exam this year that I can remember. I would definitely reccomend this book to anyone and I will be purchasing books of this brand for other subject from here on out.

Taking inspiration from the brain structure (neurons), linguistic rather than precise way of description by humans (not so cold, very warm), genetics and the behaviour of birds and ants in the nature, new techniques for the solution of various problems have been developed over the past three decades or so. All these techniques are broadly classified as artificial intelligence or computational intelligence.

Artificial intelligence encompasses methods like artificial neural networks and fuzzy logic. Computational intelligence includes optimization methods such as genetic algorithm, evolutionary algorithm, arts colony, particle swarm optimization, etc. and their variations. Feasibility of the application of these techniques in various control and optimization problems has been investigated extensively and these techniques have been applied to physical systems in a number of cases.

With the computational power now available, importance of this relatively new branch of knowledge, that is heavily dependent on soft computing, will grow significantly in the future. The appearance of a book like this one helps spread awareness about the new techniques based on soft computing and is thus a welcome addition.

In this book a cross-section of these techniques is introduced and their applications illustrated by examples from physical systems based on the author’s own research. It will provide a good introduction to a reader interested in this subject.
