Great Bible Study!

I am a First Place leader who completed this study in April 2002. My group of 20+ men and women really enjoyed it. Our group lost a total of 200 pounds this session, but many members have said that the thing they enjoy the most about the program is the Bible study. I've completed this one before, but this edition has been re-vamped recently with new content. I think the changes are great! The music CD included with the book is very helpful in memorizing the 10 Bible verses. The music isn't the best in the world, but it can still be a helpful tool. The book comes with the wonderful study, tear-out commitment records, wellness worksheets and more. The first Bible study "Giving Christ First Place" is still my all-time favorite, but this one definitely runs a close 2nd.

This is the second of the First Place Bible studies that I have done. I find it easy to use, not consuming too much time, but providing MUCH food for thought. I especially love the CD's that accompany the studies that help with scripture memorization.

Best Study I've Done So Far

I have completed 4 studies in the First Place series and this one has been the best for me. I am a First Place leader, with a group of 12. Over the past 4 sessions, our group has lost over 200 pounds. Everyday Victory for Everyday People changed so many things in my life. We can have victory in Christ - no matter who we are or what our circumstances. I loved the Scripture Memorization CD - even my pre-teen daughter got into it! I personally lost almost 15 pounds during this 10 week study. You won't be disappointed with it.

2 � stars. Foolish actions by a teenager cause problems for herself. It didn't work for me.

I want unique watchable characters or I want unique watchable activities/actions. I did not get either of these. The main characters were good but ordinary and normal. Blythe, a high school junior, does impulsive foolish things which cause problems and she cries. An unlucky thing happens to her, she gets revenge, and that creates worse things for her. She does something bad to a friend who hurts back with something awful. These foolish actions and reactions were most of the plot. I was shaking my head each time. Another chunk of time is spent watching Blythe solve clues and find items in the scavenger hunt. That was more interesting.

The best parts of the book were the secondary characters. I loved reading about Cy and Jenna, goth-looking outsiders who befriended Blythe. And I loved the parts with Franny and Eulalie, ladies in a retirement home who helped Blythe with a couple items in the scavenger hunt.

I enjoyed this author's previous book "A Match Made in High School." That was 5 stars for me.

Despite the slightly ranty beginning to the review there were definitely some enjoyable moments.

7 Clues To Winning You was a really cute book but I found myself volleying back and forth between "awww" and "ugh" for almost the entirety of the story.

The main problem for me was probably Blythe. In the beginning (and then sporadically throughout) she was selfish and snobby and thought she was above everyone else. It drove me absolutely insane how she pretty much thought the whole world revolved around her. She does end up growing beyond that, but something about her self-hating, self(and everyone else around)-destructive mindset in the process of the growth really rubbed me the wrong way. Plus, the way she needed to be smacked over the head with a sign for everything drove me batty. I figured out half the stuff, especially scavenger hunt clues, before she'd manage to come around to the conclusion herself.
Oh, and that "humiliating" picture is of her picking her nose and she acts like it's the end of the entire world. I mean, really?
Whew. Until I wrote it all down I didn't realize I disliked her character that much :P But, I've said many times before that characters don't really make or break a story for me.

The plot, however, does, and 7 Clues To Winning You sadly wasn't my favorite :[ I'd really been hoping to like this one so it truly does make me all sadface. It just seemed a little like there was too much going on. Let's go through the main and side stories:
1) The family is selling the house. This side story goes really in-depth into the process of selling a house. I found it kind of interesting since I love to just sit and watch House Hunters on HGTV for hours, but it didn't seem to contribute a lot to the story, especially since it's told from Blythe's point of view (as opposed to third person or whatnot) and the house selling process doesn't really concern her.
2) The mother dealing with some feelings. I can kind of see where this could mean something to why Blythe is the way she is, but it still doesn't seem incredibly pertinent. This is Blythe's story, not her mother's.
3) The scavenger hunt. Nothing to complain about here except for the fact that I wish there'd been a little more focus on it.
4) Luke & Blythe. Nothing to complain about here either.
5) Blythe drifting from old friends. This would certainly be an important and defining moment in Blythe's life, but the way it was added into the story felt more like an easy way to move the plot along to me.
6) Blythe's relationship with a pair of old ladies at the nursing home. This side story I completely and utterly approve of but I'll get to that later.
7) Blythe's relationship with her dad. I actually found this plot point pretty interesting even if it did get a tad tedious at times (partly because it's easier to see the adult point of view when you're older :P)
There's probably more that I'm forgetting but basically what I'm saying here is that the storyline felt really cluttered sometimes.

Okay, those old ladies I mentioned? They are a RIOT! I freaking loved them to pieces. For once, a side story relationship trumps all the main plot points for me. I mean, these ladies scheme pop can heists and buy porno mags with Blythe. Seriously, that scene with the nudie magazine at the gas station is one of the best things ever. I was reading in bed at about 3 in the morning laughing so much I woke Husband up :P

The Nuthsell: Whewie did that review get long? Chances are you looked at how long it was and just skipped right down here to get to the main point and I don't blame you! To sum it up, if you just want a contemp read that'll provide you with a few laughs then 7 Clues To Winning You is definitely for you, but be prepared for large amounts of side plots.

7 Clues to Winning You by Kristin Walker is THE PERFECT fun and cute pick-me-up book.

I was having a such a terrible day and I picked up 7 Clues to Winning You and I was giggling with minutes. The storyline is hilarious, and surprisingly moving at some points (I might have welled up once or twice) and the romance is so freaking adorable.

What I loved most about Blythe, the protagonist in 7 Clues to Winning You, is - yes, she's a rich girl at a rich school. But she's not the stereotypical rich girl who has to slum it kind of character - she volunteers at nursing homes and drives an old car and she's not bothered that she's "slumming it" or whatever. She's real and she has legit reasons for not liking her new school and she's ballsy and she cries a lot, but I felt for her every time, you know?

And LUKE. I loved Luke so freaking much. He was dorky and charming and so giving and there was this one scene with him where I just totally melted. Well, more than one, really.

Let me just say - go pick up 7 Clues to Winning You by Kristin Walker as soon it hits the shelves later this month. 7 Clues to Winning You is certain to brighten your day and have you giggling within pages. The characters are real and the romance is adorable and I've definitely pre-ordered a finished copy for my favourites shelf.

" Bad translations? Chapter 2 holds promise with the title ...

I'm not sure what you would expect from a BOOK with this title, but I expected something substantive and professional. The book is 69 pages long, in 14 point type and double-spaced. I imagine it was a ~ 8-10 page paper someone wrote for a class or business group. Here are samples of the quality of the writing and editing, exactly as in the published book: "However, there are some complications with FinTech as there is with anything. But, despite the fact that there are complications...", and then "...in touch with the digital world that we live in. Although the bank will continue their product based sales in order to get customers instead of trying to improve their customer experience. [paragraph] The banks that are in this scenario are going to be competing because their brands are going to fall on the eyes of their customers to nothing more than a utility that they can use." Bad translations? Chapter 2 holds promise with the title "Fintech's Impact on a Global Economy". Ready to roll? Sorry; it is a surprising one and a half pages long, 14 pt and double-spaced - exactly one and a half paragraphs. So, not much impact. C-, dude.

Good read!!

Finally, scholarly treatment of Marley's lyrics!

If you're a fan of Marley, this is the book you know has been missing. It illuminates a whole other dimension of Marley's life that most people have no idea about. It gives Bob's lyrics the true biblical context that they deserve. While other books provide only a glimpse of Bob's theological underpinnings, this book is essential to those who seek a more complete picture of Marley's use of, and connection to, the Bible. The way MacNeil so thoroughly analyzes the lyrics will likely open many more minds to the appreciation of Marley's message.

A must read for artists and theologians!

Often it takes an artist or musician to explain the relevance of the Bible to everyday life. Bob Marley was obviously one of those guys. But so is Dean MacNeil! As a musician and theologian, he deftly and comprehensively explores the depths of wisdom and insight that Bob Marley found and communicated to a hungry audience. This book acts as a bridge between the worlds of biblical scholarship and creative expression. Seminarians need to read this book. Creative people need to read this book. Bob Marley fans definitely need to read this book. Well written, well thought, well done, Dean! Thank you for endeavoring such a project!

"The Bible and Bob Marley" by Dean MacNeil is the first book written on the King of Reggae as biblical interpreter ("one of the few to take Bob Marley's use of the Bible seriously" writes Stephen C.A. Jennings in the foreword)

MacNeil limited the analysis to songs composed during the Island period from 1973 to 1980: in a total of 83 songs, he identified 137 biblical references, mostly from Psalms, Proverbs, Gospels, Pauline Literature, and Major Prophets.

There are 5 interesting chapters (Introduction, Review of the Literature, The Wisdom Songs of Bob Marley, The Mission Songs of Bob Marley, Conclusion) and 2 useful appendices.

In Appendix A there are 7 tables: Psalm, Wisdom, Apocalypse, and biblical references by album, category, book type and testament.

In Appendix B there are 4 figures: biblical references and non-biblical proverbs per album, Wisdom and Pauline references per album, and Wisdom and Apocalypse references per album.

"Why should you read this book on Bob Marley when ever so often every year, another article, another book or another film comes out on the King of Reggae?" asks Pastor Stephen Jennings.

Because, in my opinion, it's a well-researched and well written book, unique, original, the one and the only about this topic.

I like MacNeil's song-by-song analysis (Small Axe, So Jah Seh, Guiltiness, Running Away, Africa Unite, Zion Train, Forever Loving Jah, Stiff Necked Fools, Johnny Was, Rat Race, So Much Things To Say, The Heathen) and I hope he will plan a book about the Pre-Island Records era.

Logical, informative, and very well-written

Alexander Grab has crafted a marvelous analysis of Europe during the Napoleonic period. This is a well-written and enlightening volume that details the application and effect of French (particularly Napoleonic) hegemony throughout much of the continent between 1792 and 1815. It provides a perfect balance of detail and brevity. It is "low-density" in its presentation, making it easy to read and comprehend. And yet it manages to paint a comprehensive picture and accomplishes its stated aims remarkably well.

Grab begins his work with an excellent introduction that outlines recent scholarship on the Napoleonic period. He emphasizes that his own work is meant as a synthesis of secondary literature intended to provide an overview of Napoleonic rule in a European context. The organization of the chapters is excellent and lends itself to easy comprehension. It begins with a chapter that provides a chronological narrative of the French Revolutionary era (beginning in 1792) and on through the rise of the French Empire (under Napoleon) to its height in 1810-1812. The second chapter provides an overview of Napoleonic rule in Europe, emphasizing the common threads and themes observed throughout the empire. Ten subsequent chapters function as the core of the book, with each chapter dedicated to a different country that--at one time or another during the period--was incorporated into the French Empire (France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany (as it existed during the era), Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, Italy, the Grand Duchy of Warsaw (Poland), and Illyria). These chapters examine in detail the application of French rule, its effect on the country and its development, and the legacy of Napoleonic dominance. These ten chapters can easily function as standalone essays that can be read independently of each other. Following these essays, Grab provides another chronological chapter that picks up where his first chapter left off, covering the invasion of Russia in 1812 and on through the French defeats in the Wars of the Sixth and Seventh Coalitions. These "flanking" chronological chapters help weave the standalone essays together, providing overall continuity.

The major theme of Grab's work is on the "Janus face" of Napoleonic rule in Europe. Napoleon was a harbinger of change and modernity in Europe, precipitating major reforms and, in some locations, virtually ending the existence of the Ancien R�gime--the monarchical and aristocratic social and political system that had dominated Europe for centuries. These efforts created substantial legacies in many countries in the empire, like the establishment of uniform legal systems, improved primary and secondary education, and centralized state apparatuses supported by technical and professional bureaucracies. Despite these progressive reforms and their modernizing effects, Grab emphasizes that French rule was unmistakably characterized by exploitation as well. The transformations in imperial territories were predicated on Napoleon's need for efficient tax collection and conscription systems to feed his inexorable war machine. Napoleon ultimately engineered an empire intended to enrich and elevate France above the rest of Europe. Still, the concluding chapter emphasizes the lasting influence Napoleonic reforms had in many parts of Europe, even after the collapse of the empire and Napoleon's final defeat and exile.

Grab's writing style is clear and easy to follow. He makes great use of topical headings within each of his chapters, separating his narrative into clear and distinct sections. Each of his chapters on the countries in the Napoleonic Empire follows a generally chronological progression of the country through the Napoleonic period and ends with a section on the lasting effects and legacy of Napoleonic rule. This format makes each chapter easy to read and understand.

My only issue with this book is that it lacks an analysis of the countries in Europe that were not under the domination of France, notably the other major rivals to the French Empire: Britain, Russia, Austria, Prussia, and the Ottoman Empire. Having an analysis of each of these major powers (and other minor powers such as Denmark and Sweden) and their relationships to the Napoleonic Empire would have provided a truly comprehensive analysis of Europe during the period. Still, this is outside the stated scope of Grab's work, which was to analyze the effect of Napoleonic reforms in the countries of the empire, and can hardly be called a criticism.

This is a great book and I highly recommend it for any reader interested in the Napoleonic period, particularly if the interest is in a broader European context as opposed to a French-centric analysis.

Thorough Yet Concise And Objective As Well

The author writes a history and an analysis of the political and social policies of Napoleon in France and throughout Europe. Chapters relate the changes attempted and effected in each of the regions to come under the domination of Napoleon.
Well researched and written, the book is particularly appreciated for having a complete lack of bias. It is rare to read a book in which the attitude of the author in respect of Napoleon is not apparent. Grab is consistently objective when writing about the administrations established by Napoleon in Europe noting "The Janus Face of Napoleon's Rule: Reform and Exploitation".
